Army restricts access to photos of soldiers with Afghan corpses
Source: Seattle Times

The Army is strictly controlling access to several grisly photos of U.S. soldiers holding up Afghan corpses, images that were uncovered as part of an investigation into alleged war crimes.

Earlier this month, Army prosecutors at Joint Base Lewis-McChord turned over the photos to a military representative of civilian attorneys representing five soldiers accused of murdering three Afghan civilians and other crimes.

But an Army commander decided the photos should not be released. In an unusual move, prosecutors then demanded defense representatives at the base return the computer disk containing the photos, according to attorneys involved in the case.

The decision reflects concern among the Army's senior leadership that publication of such evidence could anger Afghan civilians at a time the United States is trying to win support for a counterinsurgency campaign against the Taliban.

25. Furthermore, the folks living there don't know that their families or friends
have been killed - gotta keep it on the down low.

4. That's not surprising
The Army is draw from the population and our young people ( the majority of any army) are the most “violent and murderous” in history as well

5. Whoa ... the right wing does everything it can to raise distrust of our youth ....
Edited on Sun Sep-26-10 02:01 AM by defendandprotect
and always has --

Remember "juvenile delinquents"?

In fact, our youth are among the most peaceful in our population --

despite "news" to the contrary!

PLUS the right wing has been working for decades to create a violent America --

introducing the Drug War -- creating fear among citizens of one another --

it's been highly successful. But faked!!

And, keep in mind that the only way the right wing can rise is by political violence --

and we've had it -- in plein air -- for 50 years -- political assassinations, smears,

stolen elections -- takeover of our "free press."

Right wing propaganda is rampant and successful -- it shortcircuits any real thought!

I'd also remind you that the military still has to work very hard to turn young males

into murderers -- that reluctance to kill remains even today!

Military training videos are the latest gimmick to turn killing onto a game!

16. And don't forget how 99% of soldiers who come back from wars don't kill again
Or even feel the need to. That reluctance you speak of continues even after being trained to kill and actually killing during wars. Also don't forget how no amount of training stops PTSD either.

I firmly believe that humanity is not naturally warlike. We may have our violent fights but those are mostly personal and involve emotions. Going to war requires training that goes contrary to nature.

19. Agree with you -- and Howard Zinn and all his research agrees with you -- !!!
Violence is taught --

and unfortunately war is a money maker and profit incentive for the few --

also works well for commiting crimes behind wars -- and controlling populations!!

17. No I'm going to go W/ my original statement
I've spent most of my adult life in the Military, if the basic ingredients that would lead a person to murder people for "sport" aren't there, going to war won't bring them out.

20. Well, if you're military you must be aware of how hard military works to teach soldiers to murder ..
And, again, that is what Sy Hersh is saying -- the training has intensified to

create an ever more brutal and murderous military!

23. I left the Army in 2003
I am unaware of the Army going out of their way to teach me to "murder". When I was in it was genrally understood that if you were a slimeball on the block you'd be a slimeball in the Army. There were exceptions of course, but I never saw anyone "just snap" and become a killer (Pvt. Pyle in full metal jacket) because the Army taught them to be.

and I respect your right to form your own opinion on the issue. That said, I don't share your POV on this issue and I suspect I never will. So in the interests of not propagating meaningless argument, I resign.

27. Why wouldn't we have "strong" feelings about the most "murderous" military
ever raised -- especially since we taxpayers pay for this training -- for these wars --

for our privatized military/mercenaries -- for the soldiers at $1 million each/each year --

and for the damage done post-war ... to other nations and to our own soldiers!!???

????????????????????

Yeah, I'm sure that as long as they don't see those pictures they'll never hear about what is happening in their country and will continue to throw rose petals at our troops. My BS meter just exploded.

12. Warriors throughout history...
have taken "trophies".

Only the naive Americans could imagine that their own warriors wouldn't.

War is an ugly business, and if Americans don't want their warriors involved in attrocities, they need to stop the endless war we are in.

28. There is no middle ground
If you support a police presence in your hometown , you support the statistically insignificant number of police officers who hide behind their badges to commit crimes every year.

There's no middle ground
