Tag-Team Testimony from Bush, Cheney Will Limit Divergent Answers

WASHINGTON - President Bush's plan to appear before the Sept. 11 commission with Vice President Dick Cheney at his side violates a fundamental rule of investigations, but the panel accepted the unusual arrangement to get the president's cooperation.

Bush insisted on the joint appearance in agreeing to take questions from all 10 members of the panel investigating the Sept. 11 attacks. He initially had offered to meet only with the commission's top two members, former New Jersey Gov. Thomas Kean, the chairman; and former Rep. Lee Hamilton, the vice chairman.

No date has been set for the tag-team testimony. The arrangement virtually eliminates any possibility of divergent answers from Bush and Cheney, and lets Bush pass off any question he'd rather avoid and makes it impossible for the commission to ask either man any follow-up questions.

Although the joint appearance has some advantages for Bush, it might also give new ammunition to critics who view Cheney as the real power in the White House and the driving force behind the decision to invade Iraq.

all of this news, the no WMD, etc, etc, etc. Why are his poll numbers so high? None of us there could figure it out and this is a mostly republican small community. Cripes there was a Republican woman there that asked the same question.

If the polls imply things are close it makes it easier to try and steal the election in a few states.

As for this testimonial thing. It speaks volumes when the president can't testify alone, and basically won't allow any documentation of his testimony, which I can't even call testimony because he won't do it under oath.

Will this be televised? I for one would love to see it. I'm SURE President Cheney will be in charge, telling Bush when he can answer, and when he should shut up.

I'm also envisioning Cheney holding a loaded gun that he's got hidden from the camera, but which he has aimed at the Commission, so they won't ask any "funny" questions.

Obviously Junior is not permitted to answer questions without his "official minder," Uncle Dick, present to watch what he says and make sure it goes as rehearsed.

They wouldn't have allowed this sham to happen if there was any doubt.

They seem to be admitting that they lie so much that this is the only way to make sure they don't get tangled up in that proverbial web.

On my way to work this morning there was a rare moment of journalistic truth when radio news reader reporting this story announced that President Bush and President Cheney would appear before the commission.

It should come in handy.
