Schumer audit: Changes needed to make nuke plants secure

ALBANY -- A federal audit calls for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to improve nuclear power plant security against infiltration by potential terrorists.

The audit was sought by Sen. Charles Schumer of New York in March after it was learned a suspected al-Qaida member worked in a New Jersey nuclear power plant for six years.

The audit set to be released Monday recommends additional training in identifying suspected terrorists, greater access to criminal databases by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, stepped up "re-screening" of power plant employees and notifying plant operators of foreign travel.

2. Nuclear power is a litany of problems.

And the fundamental one is that the potential damage from failures are on a scale that can cripple a country. By definition such failure is going to result from an unpredictable confluence of predictable small-scale failures and cannot be adequately guarded against by any form of planning.
