Consumer bankruptcy filings climb 11%
Source: MarketWatch

U.S. consumer bankruptcy filings rose 11% in the first nine months of this year, versus the same period in 2009, the American Bankruptcy Institute said Monday, citing data from the National Bankruptcy Research Center. Filings totaled 1,165,172 nationwide during the first nine months of 2010, compared to 1,046,449 total consumer filings during the same period a year ago. The bankruptcy filings so far in 2010 represent the highest total since 2005. "We expect that there will be nearly 1.6 million new bankruptcy filings by year end," ABI Executive Director Samuel Gerdano said in a statement. Consumer bankruptcies totalled 130,329 in September. That was 3.3% up from August 2010

1. bad!
This isn't good, I believe this is also due to over-regulation
Sarbanex-Oxley was very damaging to the U.S. economy, not because of transparency but because a specific section of SOX requires a company to spend way too much money, as soon as SOX was finalized a whole bunch of public companies went private or set up an HQ somewhere else on the planet.

2. Sarbanes-Oxley is hardly something that's causing a spike in consumer bankruptcies

7. Chamber of Commerce (Republican) talking point...
Accountability is only acceptable to Republicans when it is applied to someone else. When it's mentioned it is usually in regard to some poor bastard working for minimum wage or outsourced onto the street.

9. The OP has defensible point. I would be interested to hear an actual argument from you.
Using the pug talking point label is not an argument.

SarbOx is a law whose actual benefits have not measured up to what was promised, and whose unforeseen consequences have been worse than expected. It's worth a debate based on the merits.

4. These filings are from those who hung on during the first wave but can no longer
juggle incomes if they have any.

I filed bankruptcy in June. I'm now beginning to fall behind on my monthly payments of necessities. I've defaulted on my equity payment for the first time last month. I simply can't pay it anymore. At this point I'm hoping GMAC can't my promissory note so I can put off the inevitable foreclosure that's coming.

5. Consumers?
We used to be called "Citizens". Now, we're just a cash cow.

And, when we're out of cash, it's off to the BBQ pit.

6. Just another thing those rethugs saw coming!
I got the notice to sell our home at auction, fuck B of A, and that pushed me into BK. I am trying Ch 7 but these legal trustees are bitching because I have a union job with overtime. We all know you don't make a budget on overtime!

BofA refused a renegotiation and the cc companies were minimaly helpful.

The government didn't make the banks and AIG jump through this many hoops.

Rat bastards!

I no longer feel fail or even bad about it. The game was rigged for us to lose!
