Obama administration lifts deep-water drilling moratorium
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) -- Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced Tuesday that the Obama administration is lifting the moratorium on deep-water oil drilling it put in place after the Gulf oil spill disaster.
Operators must comply with new rules and regulations in order to get permission to resume drilling, Salazar said.
"There will always be risks associated with deep-water drilling," Salazar said. "We have reached a point where we have significantly reduced those risks."
The six-month moratorium was first issued by Salazar in May after the April 20 explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico that killed 11 people and triggered one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.

HAHAHAHA they're kidding right?

Next thing you know, they'll be telling us that most of the oil that spilled into the Gulf has just disappeared. Oh, wait...

"Drill, baby, drill" will be back with a vengeance.

They'll lift the moratorium, then slow-walk the paperwork. Pre-emptive window-dressing.

19. It amazes me how we can't put them to work in green jobs
I know that jobs are a consideration. But big oil still has so much influence, or else the government could find jobs for them in renewable energy/exploring renewable energy.

Edited on Tue Oct-12-10 08:35 PM by mvd
And work around the Repukes - take away from defense spending and end the Bush tax cuts for the rich. There are also opportunities for green jobs out there right now. Even Salazar admits there are risks out there, and after the biggest spill in U.S. history, the risk is too much for my liking.

31. Unfortunately authorizing funds and getting them is two things.
Like the money for health care, the pubs are threatening to hold it back.

Hopefully the new procedures put in place will help to not let another spill occur.

They can try to hold funding back, but there's only so much they can control. Lots of ways to get money in such a big economy.

20. I have voted in every election for the past 40 years
This last election was the first time I honestly believed I was voting for someone rather than against someone else.

To say I am disappointed would be an understatement of epic proportions. I understand all about the republican obstructionism and for that I don't fault Obama although I think the bipartisan BS should have come to a screeching roaring halt about 6 months into his term.

My real issue is with the people has selected to be on his team and give him advice. This would be a prime example.

Damn shame but a Harvard education doesn't prepare anyone to shake up the world. Quite the opposite, ivy league graduates are the ardent defenders of the status quo.

Change we can believe? Yeah, right as long as it doesn't inconvenience the elite.

28. Oh the outrage!! The thought that any POTUS will ban all deep-sea oil drilling is totally absurd.
Edited on Tue Oct-12-10 09:10 PM by ClarkUSA
Yeah, as if President Obama or ANY President of the UNITED STATES would stop the operation of thousands of deep-sea oil rigs and severely disrupt the US economy, especially those of the Gulf states. No nation has a leader who's stupid enough to do that when there is no green energy alternative to pick up the slack or absorb the economic blow due to lost state revenue and jobs.

The problem with BP was it didn't have the kind of safety valve that the EU demands on all its rigs. Meanwhile, no one bothers to enquire as to the new regulations being put into place by the Obama administration.

Gee, I wonder why? I guess the whining will never end. :eyes:

32. "There will always be risks "
True, which means that there will be blowouts in the future, and more ruined ocean ecosystems from these blowouts.

But we'll have oil.
