Costly virtual border fence in tatters
Source: LA Times

The Department of Homeland Security, positioning itself to cut its losses on a so-called invisible fence along the U.S.- Mexico border, has decided not to exercise a one-year option for Boeing to continue work on the troubled multibillion-dollar project involving high-tech cameras, radar and vibration sensors.

The result, after an investment of more than $1 billion, may be a system with only 53 miles of unreliable coverage along the nearly 2,000-mile border.

4. Boeing wins contract to install 'virtual fence' (9/21/06)
WASHINGTON — The Homeland Security Department Thursday awarded Boeing Co. a $67 million contract to install a high-tech "virtual fence" along the Mexican border in Arizona.

The contract, which calls for cameras, sensors and even unmanned planes, is the first part of a multibillion-dollar government plan designed to reduce illegal entry along the 6,000 miles of the Canadian and Mexican borders.

The final price tag for the so-called Secure Border Initiative is unknown, but Homeland Security officials disputed published reports saying the cost could exceed $2 billion.

"What we are looking to build is a 21st century virtual fence," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said at a news conference announcing the contract award.

2. More than $1 billion could certainly feed a lot of people. The amount
of money spent on wasted projects, military, etc. is disgraceful.
