State prison guard arrested in drug sting

(10-27) 10:06 PDT GILROY -- A state prison guard has been arrested in a sting in which he agreed to sneak drugs and cell phones into Salina Valley State Prison in exchange for cash, Santa Clara County sheriff's officials said today.

Sergio Javier Noguera, 38, of Salinas, a guard at the prison in Soledad (Monterey County), was taken into custody at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after he showed up near the Leavesley Road exit off Highway 101 in Gilroy to meet with undercover detectives pretending to be an outside source of contraband for inmates, said sheriff's Sgt. Rick Sung.

Noguera believed he would be paid $2,500 to smuggle in an ounce of methamphetamine, a ounce of heroin, 3 1/2 ounces of marijuana and four cell phones.

2. ...
I worked as a CO once... common knowledge is that most of the contraband comes in from the guards

8. Me too.
But we didn't have a problem with drugs and this was a big max security prison. Of course a big difference is that our system was 100% public right down to the food prep, teachers, etc. EVERYONE was a public employee. But in private prisons or public prisons that outsource jobs, the story is very different.

If you smuggle in drugs for any prisoner you immediately become their bitch. Once you have committed a felony for them, they own you. And all the guards I know understood this (and we kept an eye on each other).

I can't imagine being that stupid. And now that the former CO is going to prison, he will be a bitch in fact as well as name. That's right folks, he sold his ass for the chance of $2500. How stupid is that? Private prison stupid, that's how stupid that is.

Well, just how do you think all that stuff gets into the prisons in the FIRST place? Either the guards are doing it or agreeing to look the other way when visitors do it. The alternative is that they're so incompetent they can't catch anyone!

10. Happens all the time
drugs, cigarettes, phones, and other shit. This has always begged the question, if we can't keep drugs out of the most secure places in the US, how can we ever keep them off of free streets? The answer is we can't, and never will...time to decriminalize, regulate, and fund chem dependency programs.

11. He pissed off somebody,
or else he just got sloppy. This has been going on forever. Ninety-percent of the contraband coming into prisons come in from the guards. The inmates aren't going to screw that up without a reason -- it's income/barter.
