ANKARA, Turkey - One of the suspects arrested in Italy as part of a Europe-wide crackdown on a Turkish militant group is the movement's top official in Europe, Italian authorities said, as Turkey detained 10 more suspects.
The crackdown began Thursday morning in Turkey, Italy, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands as security forces raided houses used by the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP-C, a Marxist group that calls for the overthrow of the Turkish government. With the latest arrests, 63 people have been taken into custody.
According to an Italian police intelligence report obtained by The Associated Press, one of the five people arrested in Italy was a 32-year-old Turkish citizen identified as Avni Er who had claimed responsibility for both a bombing and a foiled attack on the day of the wedding of the Turkish prime minister's son in August in Istanbul.
Er was arrested with four other people Thursday in the central Italian town of Perugia, where he had allegedly installed a cell of the Marxist Revolutionary People's Liberation Army/Front, or DHKP-C.
