Evolution flap aided education, state official says

Georgia teachers are in a stronger position to explain evolution as a result of the public furor over the attempt to remove it from the state's proposed science standards, the state science coordinator said Wednesday.

The public outcry gave teachers a clear mandate: Teach evolution to national expectations, Stephen Pruitt said Wednesday, addressing members of the National Science Teachers Association, who are meeting this week in Atlanta.

"It's been proven in Georgia," Pruitt said. "You need to teach national standards. You need to teach science as it should be taught. Never again do we have to worry about a teacher standing before a board of education alone, defending themselves. They've had an entire state stand up and say: This is how it should be taught."
