BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - The NATO allies hedged Friday on whether to assume a peacekeeping role in Iraq while promising to use force to stop terrorists everywhere.
As Secretary of State Colin Powell pressed the U.S. case for intervention by the newly 26-nation alliance to bolster security in Iraq, the allies deferred a decision until after an interim Iraqi government takes power June 30. <snip>
But he said it was up to Iraq to decide whether it would want NATO to take on a peacekeeping role. "I don't know if it's going to happen," he told reporters. <snip>
NATO leaders are to meet in Istanbul, Turkey, in late June, but NATO's indecision Friday could mean no green light would be forthcoming, even then. <snip>
