U.S. Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.) claims victory in close congressional race
Source: San Jose Mercury News

U.S. Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, declared victory Thursday afternoon in his race for re-election to the 11th congressional district, an area that stretches from Morgan Hill to Danville and east to Lodi, in what had been the closest congressional race in the United States.

"The votes are in, the results are clear. The voters of this district have chosen me to be the congressman for the next session," McNerney said at a news conference.

As of Thursday night, McNerney led Republican David Harmer by 47.9 percent to 47 percent - a margin of 1,685 votes out of more than 230,000 total votes counted so far.

The two-term Democrat, the only member of Congress who holds a PhD in mathematics, upset former congressman and rancher Richard Pombo in 2006 to first win the seat. He issued a statement late Wednesday saying his lead was insurmountable because there are only about 11,000 provisional ballots left to be counted in the four counties that make up the district.

2. This is excellent news. An actual smart guy. I like Jerry McNerney
But I'm afraid Kamala Harris isn't going to make it . . .

4. Great- thanks for the link. Kamala Harris would be the icing on the California elecion cake
Actually, Issa's defeat would be even better, but that's another issue

Thanks for pointing me to updated and better information on Kamala Harris. Now I'm encouraged, rather than discouraged.

10. I know, I've been holding my breath on that
one. That will be a clean sweep of the State's offices.

8. That was one of the races we were watching for election fraud in 06
so when I saw him struggling this time, I wondered what was going on. Good to see him finish on top!

11. US Chamber of Commerce spent big bucks attacking him
Especially on the Valley side of the district (Sacramento/Stockton media market) targeting the knuckle-dragging low hanging fruit.

It is a BIG win!
