Liberals plan to push Obama not to compromise with GOP
Source: WP

On the heels of the Democratic Party's huge losses in last week's midterm elections, liberal activists have begun planning to push President Obama on a series of issues, demanding that he not cede any ground to Republicans.

Liberal groups have blasted Obama at times over the past two years as not being sufficiently dedicated to their positions - history that factored into their criticism of the White House on Thursday for signaling that it will compromise with the GOP on the issue of extending tax cuts that are scheduled to expire this year.

Others said they would attack Obama if he embraced any proposal to reduce Social Security benefits, as the leaders of a bipartisan panel proposed this week to cut the federal deficit.

And when Obama and Congress return to Washington next week, gay rights activists will call for the president to take a stand against "don't ask, don't tell," the policy that bars openly gay people from serving in the military. A repeal of the ban passed this year in the House but has stalled in the Senate.

This push from the left could complicate Obama's strategy as he tries to cope with the GOP gains in Congress.

8. Correct.

Taking their cue from Republicans, the mainstream media employs the labels "liberal" and "left" to marginalize those who actively push for sound government. In my opinion, revoking the Bush tax cuts for the rich is actually a conservative fiscal policy.

4. What's frustrating to me is that Democratic Presidents often think that standing up to liberals
Edited on Fri Nov-12-10 12:05 PM by mzmolly
is a way to appear strong. What is actually needed, is someone who stands up to REPUBLICANS. Obama better find a way to do that.

7. I don't think so. I worry that Obama's advisors

have a mistaken idea about how he can show strength, however. Clinton moved to the center after the loss of the midterm elections. This is all the chatter about "the way forward".

6. Obama is now between a rock and a hard place. He pissed away.........
........the Dem advantage during his first two years and now wants to "compromise"? Now it's the Dems turn to just say NO, otherwise he won't have ANY chance of re-election. The Republicans could run Palin with Odonnell as vice president and they will win if he gives in any more.

11. Good. This is what we should be doing.
I'm amazed that some (though they may well be Republican trolls) are saying they plan to sit out next election.

15. I've been a strong advocate for Obama, but this commission is too much,
I cannot defend it or equivocate. I think there is a moral responsibility to defend against this attack of social services that is emanating from the administration itself. It must stop and be reversed immediately. There was a price paid earlier this month, and we cannot afford to pay any more.

When I saw the line-up, I kind of died inside.
