Justice dept. cracks down on adult porn
Edited on Sat Apr-03-04 12:45 PM by JoFerret
http://www.charlotte.com/mld/observer/news/8345436.htm?1c

<<So far, the Bush administration has a perfect record in the 25 adult obscenity cases it's filed. The cases, brought in mostly conservative communities across the country, ended in two guilty verdicts and 23 guilty pleas. Charges are pending in a dozen others.

And the crackdown is expanding. Earlier this year, Attorney General John Ashcroft put noted anti-porn crusader Bruce Taylor on the Justice Department payroll as a senior counsel for the criminal division on obscenity issues. And President Bush's 2005 budget proposal contains $4 million to hire more prosecutors and FBI agents devoted to targeting adult obscenity.

Free-speech advocates, such as the American Civil Liberties Union, worry that the Justice Department is engaging in censorship.

And a representative of the adult entertainment business accuses Ashcroft of pandering to the Republican conservative base before next fall's presidential election.

"It's so transparently political," said lawyer Jeffrey Douglas, the chairman of the Los Angeles-based Free Speech Coalition, a trade association for the multibillion-dollar adult entertainment industry. "With this administration, if the results of other kinds of wars aren't working you go to the culture wars.">>

1. Requires registration - could you post an excerpt?
They are going to have a problem if they do this because some of their biggest supporters make huge profits on porn. I think Marriott is one.

19. More
I didn't need to register, btw.

So far, the Justice Department appears to be targeting mostly very graphic pornography depicting violence, simulated rapes and bestiality.

...

The indictment charges owners Robert Zicari and Janet Romano with multiple counts of using the mail and the Internet to distribute obscene materials. If convicted, they face up to 50 years in prison and $2.5 million in fines.

6. Remember the old Rush-ism that liberals hate themselves?
It's the conservatives who are disgusted by their own bodies. It's the conservatives who are destroying the country they claim to love so much. It's the conservatives who feel that poisoning the earth is OK as long as there's profit in it. It's the religious conservatives who think that all the lying, cheating, stealing and corruption is OK because it's a means to an end- a way to force the great religious war between Islam and Christianity. Rapture, End Times, End of Days, Armageddon; whatever you want to call it, these people want to foist a horrible finish to the world upon the rest of us to satisfy their hatred and lusts. As the jokers on 700 club have stated for MANY years:"The End is Coming." Who in their right mind goes along with these kooks? Do they want all of us living behind barbed wire, armed to the teeth, and shooting anything that moves? It's time to put the religious right back where they belong-in the minority, with no sayso over political matters. Just my usual Saturday afternoon rant. L.

If they refuse to watch such outrageous pornographic material doesn't that prove that they are from the Middle East?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I wonder who else would fall into that category?

8. This is a non-starter
Pornography revenue is completely integrated with all other legitimate business revenue streams in the US economy. ATT Broadband and DirectTV(General Motors) are 2 of the largest providers of porn to homes and hotels and aren't about to drop it. Also RW is so tied to corp business, they can't be all that serious with prosecuting. Pure show to satisfy the base.

12. The New Gop: Monitoring the Bedroom, not the Boardroom.
 It irritates the f*ck outta me that these hypocrites can claim 'moral high ground' and push an agenda that drives us back to the Victorian Age when there's so much other rot going on in this country.

The difference between the Dems and the GOP, in my mind has always been that the Dems wish to deal with the 'bigger picture for everyone's good', while the GOP trys to control people's personal lives for 'their own good'.

20. Technically, in Texas,
you are correct. As long as the dildo is for sexual gratification it is illegal to be sold. Now, if its for those sore, aching muscles then its a cultural war in general.

Whereas a person slaughtering his enemies, drawing gouts of blood and gore on video = PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE.

This country suffers from such a crippling psychosis - I tell you.

22. Whenever this topic comes up, I think of my elected official to
a certain large body in Washington D.C., say, when I was growing up, who preached biblical values, and make a pass at my Mom when his wife wasn't looking. And of course, there is our local Congressman, Ken Calvert (R), who just happened to be caught in a car with a hooker. I believe he stated that he was just giving her a ride. Take that how you will.

on a deserted road in the middle of an orange grove. I don't know what kind of ride home it was, (seeing how the cops took both of them one home, after finding him unfit to drive) but before the cops ride, I can bet there was some other ridding.

The local rag of Repub front they call a newspaper had the whole story but covered up a lot of it, then after the story came out did so many retractions about it, you would have thought they were holding a gun to the editors head. Them were the days, damn I wish there was an Internet back then, that Realtor would have been out on his ear.

On edit: not that that I would care what somebody does in the privacy of their own fog windows. It's just I don't think that they should be struting around telling others that they are all that, The contempt has run amuck

23. What is it with these people ...
and sex??? They are obsessed with the idea that someone, somewhere might actually be aroused!

If they think sex is wrong or dirty, fine. No one is forcing them to have it. Frankly, I'd be very happy if they stopped having sex, because then they'd stop breeding!

27. Blue Laws
We are back to the Blue Laws. We must flush out the evildoers...terrorists? What Terrorists? They don't seem to worried all they have to do is bust hookers, porn shops and pot pipe manufacturers. This is just John Ashcrofts little field day trying to rid the world of sin and do Gods work and punish them, just in time for a little oil annointment ritual.

He is a bit of a J. Edgar Hoover if you ask me. J. Edgar Ashcroft.

40. THIS is what they focused on instead of Al Queda.
Ashkkkroft made the call to focus on specific issues at Justice--one of them NOT being terror--and THIS is how he spent our taxes. He's busy trying to screw with some off the wall wacking material and in the meantime we had a few thousand die on 9/11 and even more dying later in Iraq.

Gawd, these guys just never cease to amaze me with the level of stupidity. It'd seem to me that direct threats of passenger planes being used as bombs would trump 25 guys pleading guilty to bad porn.
