Haiti cholera toll tops 900 with six provinces affected
U.N. forecasts up to 200,000 may become ill as outbreak grows

PORT-AU-PRINCE — The death toll from Haiti's cholera epidemic has reached more than 900 and the disease is present in six of the 10 provinces of the earthquake-battered Caribbean country, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

An update on the ministry website said as of November 12, there had been 917 deaths and more than 14,600 hospitalized cases since the outbreak began more than three weeks ago in the Western Hemisphere's poorest state.

The central rural province of Artibonite, the epicenter of the epidemic, remained the worst affected, accounting for nearly 600 of the total deaths. Other provinces affected were Center, Nord, Nord Ouest, Sud, and Ouest, where the capital Port-au-Prince is located.

The capital, which bore the brunt of destruction from the January 12 earthquake in Haiti, has recorded 27 deaths up to November 12. The government and its aid partners are fighting to prevent the disease spreading in crowded city slums and tent camps housing over 1.3 million homeless earthquake survivors.

The world's governments who promised such huge amounts of aid which never really materialised obviously don't mind that Haitians don't matter. :sarcasm: :(

Either way, it's bad form.

He lead a team from a conservative church group that built a house there. The Haitians never did anything against my brother but he went ahead and did this against the Haitians. I don't mean building a house exactly. I mean it as a collorary to the phrase 'There is no such thing as a free lunch.'

There is nothing as a free house built by this group. They exact upon the locals and especially the new owners their own private brand of Christianity. I would imagine it might be the same as conservative Christian groups who claim that prisoners in US jails convert in large numbers. I am sure most of the prisoners do this to gain extra privileges and when released laugh about their time when they fooled those stupid missionaries. Does the owner of this new house in Haiti have the same option? If he does not give at least lip service to my brother's church, even at this great distance (Housed in Tulsa) will he lose the comforts or will the long arm of Christianity reach out and squash him like most Haitians since they gained their freedom in 1804?

I really don't think it would be that much of an inconvenience for a member of the predominantly Catholic citizenry of Haiti. I expect he will pay the lip service, maybe even believe. But in exchange for a house that is likely more structurally sound than any he has ever lived in, I'd say the Haitian comes out on top.

Also, as a historical footnote, the Haitians kept Catholicism as their state religion after they expelled their Franco overlords.

Would I be willing to give lip service to a king I don't adore for security for my family? Yes, if I must.

Brazil, Cuba join forces against Haiti cholera

Brazil, Cuba and some Brazilian universities have joined forces to provide health care to cholera-ridden Haiti, including building a treatment center near its capital, the Brazilian Health Ministry said Monday.

The ministry said it signed agreements with Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and Federal University of Santa Catarina to set up a network of health clinics and train 2,340 health workers in Haiti.

"All the activities will be organized with the collaboration of health teams from Haiti and Cuba made up of doctors, nurses and epidemiologists," it said in a statement.

A separate agreement is expected to be signed later this week with Cuba and the World Health Organization to create a cholera treatment center in Carrefour, near Port-au-Prince, to contain the cholera epidemic, the ministry said.
