Amnesty says EU should force US to probe renditions
Source: Reuters

The European Union should put pressure on U.S. President Barack Obama during an EU-U.S. summit in Portugal this week to investigate secret transfers of terrorism suspects, Amnesty International said on Monday.

At the same time, European governments should do more to bring to light their own involvement in the U.S. policy under President George Bush to run interrogation centres in Europe or use airports on the continent to transfer detainees.

Human rights groups say the policy has allowed violation of rights of suspects because they may have been tortured while in custody of third countries.

"With all this information coming out, with civil society making noise about it, how long can the U.S. hold out? If the EU were to add its voice, it would be another pressure point that the U.S. would have to then respond to," Julia Hall, an Amnesty International researcher told reporters in Brussels.

3. The EU should do the opposite
Demand Obama allow a pass on all American war criminal behaviour. Demand that he better not open up any investigation into renditions either.

Its the only way.
The corporate press has set up, or at least allowed, such a poisonous reaction to ANY European advice or solution, that it is now an accepted normal reaction to ridicule and tease any attempt to follow a similar path, (ie. universal medicare) on any issue.

4. Agreed, but for a different reason
The EU should ask Obama to make it clear that his administration has no intention of prosecuting any members of the Bush administration, or members of his own administration, for war crimes.

This declaration will clear the way for independent parties to begin proceedings against US war criminals at the International Criminal Court (which can only act if sovereign states refuse to investigate war crimes committed by their own citizens.)

5. I disagree
I am afraid I must disagree with AI on this one. Having the EU investigate will not produce results. It is they (the EU) who are complicit.

6. US should probe renditions...
Isn't that one of the things they rendition people to have performed?

(Sorry, couldn't resist a chance for the daily anal probe joke)...
