Palin's 'refudiate' named a Word of the Year
Source: USA Today

The staff of the New Oxford American Dictionary has named "refudiate" - former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's mashup of "refute" and "repudiate" - as the 2010 Word of the Year, the Anchorage Daily News reports.

The news organization quotes the staff as saying:

"From a strictly lexical interpretation of the different contexts in which Palin has used 'refudiate,' we have concluded that neither 'refute' nor 'repudiate' seems consistently precise, and that 'refudiate' more or less stands on its own, suggesting a general sense of 'reject.' "

3. Unreal. And EVERY "liberal" or left-leaning web site has at least 2 photos/stories of her
Ugh!

TPM, Huffington -- Every picture is a republican. It's nauseating at times.

7. Why does every group seem to want to enable her?
Why is ignorance something to be celebrated? Why?

(I am asking rhetorically... please no refuting or repudiating...)

9. I am so sick of hearing about her.
She isn't intelligent, she isn't profound, she has contributed nothing to the American landscape that hasn't evolved from her ignorance (or in this case failure to grasp basic english).

Can she please just go away?

10. It's more a malapropism, not a portmanteau
As usual, the media is confusing being ignorant in even a charming way with being clever. The woman is an illiterate jackass.

12. I'm still waiting for the rule's to change...
...regarding the liberal use of apostrophe's.

One could argue that things started falling apart when "doh!" made it into several respected dictionaries (oops... dictionarie's) including the Oxford.

Or was it when the Oakland school district officially recognized Ebonics?

I'm no fan of Palin, but the English language is always being corrupted, like it or not. And like plenty of Repug concepts, if enough people start doing something (like apostrophe misuse) over and over, it's going to become "correct" or "truth".

15. the first time I saw ''refudiate'' I knew she would b next GOP nominee for president
And probably the next president. Newt, Mitt, and the other GOP hopefuls are going to have to be tutored in stupidity day & night until the primaries if they don't want to be refudiated by conservative voters.

29. agreed. while i figured "vuvuzela" to be the "cowabunga" of the '10s ....
.... and i could go with "spillcam" - if they switched to the last vowel in the alphabet, on that 2nd syllable,
i repukiate at the very sound of ms. palin's drone; no poetry there - in my totally unqualified opinion of course.
