Dick Cheney: History "Beginning to Come Around" on Bush
Source: CBS News

At groundbreaking ceremony in Dallas for the George W. Bush Presidential Center today, former Vice President Dick Cheney said "history is beginning to come around" to a more positive view of former President George W. Bush.

Cheney said that Mr. Bush, whose approval rating upon leaving office was just 22 percent, always understood that "judgments are a little more measured" with the passage of time. He added that Americans "can tell a decent, goodhearted stand up guy when they see him."

Cheney lauded Mr. Bush as a president who refused "to put on airs," stating that he was thrilled to find that the most powerful person he knew was "among the least pretentious." He said Mr. Bush was someone who could "walk with kings, yet keep the common touch," added that "there were no affectations about him at all - he treats everyone as an equal."

He spoke admiringly of Mr. Bush's actions in the wake of the Sept. 11th attacks, telling the former president that "because you were determined to throw back the enemy, we did not suffer another 9/11 or something even worse."

10. Of course the obvious question is: When did Dick Cheney become an historian?
And the statement makes no sense unless he considers the Bush memoir to be "history". Because that is the only thing that changed between last week and this week in terms of anyone writing about the Bush presidency.

to do just that. I wonder if it can be done, just think of the run-up to Iraq. The funny thing is all the effort is a waste, it only works short term. In the end, history writes itself.

bush is no where near being exhonerated for the fukkery he both brought to this nation and put this nation through and is still being put through.

No--history will be decidedly and deservedly brutal to him, as it should be. He must never be allowed to get off the mat from this.

43. This is going to be the new narrative
First Cheney, then everyone else is going to worm their way out and repeat this crap about Bush is now being viewed favorably. First in interviews on Fox, then other networks, everyone will be mentioning that they think his image is 'coming around'. Soon the general public, sheeple that most of them are, will think, "hmm. Everybody else seems to think he's not that bad. I guess those Bush years weren't so bad." Soon every anchor and program will be repeating about Bush's image rehabilitation and then they were start video montages of the 'good times' and of patriotic moments (ie 9/11). They will compare the 'good old days' to the decay that is going on now (which is directly related to Bush, but if it's not mentioned in tv-land it doesn't exist) and pine over all these wonderful ol' republicans. People will once again be reinforced with crap about how things were better then. Soon, everyone, the public and even some on DU I suspect will be repeating the new narrative that Bush was a decent president. Voila, the new truth is born.

44. Instead of wanting to burn him off like an annoying wart
we now only want to shrink him like a inflamed hemorroid. Instead of thinking he's lower than dog turds smeared on our shoes, we now merely think he's as rank as a quivering lump of coughed up phlegm we stepped on while walking on the sidewalk. Instead of thinking he smells like a bucket of fish entrails, we mostly think he smells like his mother's room at the nursing home. Vast improvement.

51. US must begin criminal investigation of torture following Bush admission
10 November 2010

Amnesty International today urged a criminal investigation into the role of former US President George W Bush and other officials in the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" against detainees held in secret US custody after the former president admitted authorizing their use.

In his memoirs, published yesterday, and in an interview on NBC News broadcast on 8 November 2010, the former President confirmed his personal involvement in authorizing "water-boarding" and other techniques against "high value detainees".

"Under international law, the former President's admission to having authorized acts that amount to torture are enough to trigger the USA's obligations to investigate his admissions and if substantiated, to prosecute him," said Claudio Cordone, Senior Director at Amnesty International.

"His admissions also highlight once again the absence of accountability for the crimes under international law of torture and enforced disappearance committed by the USA."

54. Cheney, noticeably thinner, lauds Bush at library groundbreaking
Source: Yahoo News

Former Vice President Dick Cheney looked thinner at a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday in Dallas for George W. Bush's planned presidential library. It was the first time Cheney has been seen at a major public event since he underwent surgery in July to install a heart pump implant.

The former VP, on hand to introduce Bush at the ceremony, made no mention of the quarrels Bush wrote of in his recently released memoir, "Decision Points." Rather, he praised Bush as a president who handled his job "with courage, with clarity and with strength of heart."

Though Cheney looked gaunt and somewhat frail compared with his days in the White House, he was his usual self, even managing to get in a dig at President Obama's stimulus plan at the ceremony. "This may be the only shovel-ready project in America," Cheney joked at one point, looking over his shoulder at Bush. According to the Bush foundation, the estimated $300 million library is already fully funded with private donations.
