Myanmar to release pro-democracy leader

BANGKOK, Thailand, April 3 (UPI) -- Myanmar's government announced Saturday it would release a pro-democracy leader from house arrest and allow her party to attend a constitutional convention.

Myanmar Foreign Minister Win Aung said Aung San Suu Kyi would be released before May 17 when the National Convention is to reconvene, and her National League for Democracy invited to attend, Japan's Kyodo news service reported.

Win Aung made the announcement after arriving in Bangkok for talks with Thailand's Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai on Myanmar's proposed transition to democracy.

1. BBC Questions Report's Veracity

Last night 3/4/04 BBC said the Myanmar junta is backing away from this statement. On 17/5 there will be some kind of conference but that Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi's release from house detention is not guaranteed.

2. She doesn't get near the attention she should.

It's disgraceful. I know I wouldn't have her fortitude. I'd like to think so, but I doubt it. She's darn near a martyr for her people, isn't she?
