Deadly clashes erupt between Iraqi Shiites and coalition troops
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20040404/wl_mideast_afp/iraq_us_shiites&cid=1514&ncid=1473

NAJAF, Iraq (AFP) - At least three people were killed as Spanish-led troops clashed with supporters of Shiite Muslim radical leader Moqtada Sadr outside this shrine city, in the most dangerous confrontation between the US-led coalition and Iraq (news - web sites)'s majority community.

Demonstrations also erupted in Baghdad and the southern port of Basra as the Shiite radicals pressed their demands for the US-led coalition to reopen a pro-Sadr newspaper shut down last week and to release a top Sadr aide who they claim was detained on Saturday.

The fighting outside Najaf came ahead of Monday's expected arrival in Iraq of UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi who is charged with helping to resolve an impasse between the coalition and the Shiite majority over the nation's political future.

An AFP correspondent saw at least 20 people lying wounded on the ground, three of them clerics, amid the sound of explosions and gunfire on the main highway out of Najaf.

IRAQIS KILLED IN CLASHES

At least 19 Iraqis have been killed and more than 100 wounded after Spanish-led coalition troops fired on protesters in the Iraqi city of Najaf.

Reporters said troops fired from several directions, prompting clashes between the troops and militiamen loyal to a radical Shi'ite cleric.

The protests had erupted over the arrest of an aide to the cleric, Moqtada al-Sadr.

Witnesses said the troops opened fire when thousands of protesters tried to enter a coalition base on the edge of the city.

Spanish, El Salvadorean and other Spanish-speaking troops are headquartered at the base.
