Ratings Drop for "Sarah Palin's Alaska"
Source: CBS News

Ratings for "Sarah Palin's Alaska" reportedly plummeted for the show's second episode.

The show fell 40 percent on Sunday night, to 3 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The premiere drew 5 million viewers, setting a ratings record for a TLC show debut.

Only 885,000 of those viewers were in the coveted 18-49 age bracket, dropping 44 percent from last week. The report states that the show's median age is 57 - 15 years older than TLC's average.

TLC reportedly anticipated the drop, with executives realizing that some of the numbers from the show's premiere were driven by curiosity about the program. Competition from "Sunday Night Football" and the American Music Awards may have also had an effect on the numbers.

2. Did you see that clip of her beating fish with a sledge hammer?
Edited on Tue Nov-23-10 07:09 PM by emulatorloo
Olbernann showed it last night. Supposedly that's how it is done, but why in hell would anybody want to watch that on TV

4. Why the hell does anyone watch reality TV?
"but why in hell would anybody want to watch that on TV"

I hate reality TV, but sadly, I've found that this type of programming seems to appeal to both left and right equally. LOTS of people actually want to tune in and watch someone beat a fish with a sledgehammer... Think Survivor and how popular it has been.

People just eat this stuff up, I have no clue why.

15. Couldn't agree with you more Imajika...
I don't get this whole reality fad either. But especially in this case. Why anyone would tune in to watch this completely fake presentation of this train wreck of a family?

16. Yes, well, this one is just a campaign commercial...
Apparently, several million people are tuning in to watch a glorified SarahPAC campaign commercial. One that actually pays her a quarter million an episode. What a scam.

So, in this case, it is reality TV at its worst.

All of it is bad though. I really just can't see why anyone watches this crap. But I have determined that it isn't a left or right thing, it would seem equal numbers on both sides like playing voyeur and tune into this kind of super cheap, gimmicky programming.

27. Hey, I gotta' idea!
Why don't we take the reality show trend to its logical conclusion - set up a tv camera in someone's living room and they can watch themselves watching tv!

I smell a hit series!

...and the spin-offs....

Oh yeah!

I guess I just don't get reality TV. Never really cared much about what other people did enough to watch these sorts of things.

13. Yes really! They were fishing for Hallibut
Keith said it was standard operating procedure for fishermen fishing for halibut. Apparently that's how it is done.

But the scene was crazy, Bristol watching, Palin beating the fish with a sledge hammer to kill it. And of course yapping away in the voice over.

14. Really
I am not going to watch the show, but that's what they do.

When I went trout fishing as a kid we'd whack the trout on the head with the pliers we used to pull out the hook.

You have to kill the fish somehow, and don't want it to suffocate, suffering.

Pliers won't work for fish this big.

23. And wasn't she supposed to be a pro already,
showing off all her mama-grizzly skills? In the commercials (which is all I've seen) it is so obvious that she's doing it all for the first time. Fucking fraud.

8. BUH bye...
and good riddance.

What a joke this whole thing was...just a big old commercial for any offices
that she might want to run for...OR...just to get more money.

St. Sarah McMoneyWhore just cannot get enough of the "lame-stream" media, cameras
and lights...again, a joke.

10. If she can sustain 3 million viewers, it will be a hit show (at least for cable.)
I think she's a fascinating person - I haven't seen the show except for previews - but a lot of people like her and a lot of people hate her.

She has a future as an actress, not a politician, IMO.

11. Yeah, 3M is huge for that channel.
The nature of cable TV.

As for the clubbing of the Halibut catch, its just part of fishing. Except for the extremely squeamish or fish lovers it's nothing thats hard to watch. It doesn't take much and it doesn't turn gory. This is not clubbing seals.

21. I worked in the ratings business for years
I love the "spin" when ratings drop from broadcast managers. Oh it was Sunday Night Football, oh it was expected. BS. When ratings drop it was expected or out of our control. When ratings go up it is the amazing program genius of our program director.

The bottom line is with ratings...if a radio or TV program is good the ratings go up. If it is bad, they go down. Palin's show is bad enough that over 2 million people decided not to tune back in.

Ad dollars however are probably huge so ratings don't matter to TLC.

32. I watched an episode
Sarah and Bristol were on a commercial fishing boat, getting in the way of people trying to catch halibut.

I'm sure the boat captain was well paid for the decrease in productivity.

The script was cringe-worthy in its effort to zing "liberals".

I don't think I'll watch another.

:hi:
