White House to review 9/11 report before release
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N04320135.htm

WASHINGTON, April 4 (Reuters) - The White House will vet "line by line" the report of an independent commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks before it is publicly released, the commission chairman said on Sunday.

Chairman Thomas Kean, a former Republican governor of New Jersey, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he was surprised to learn of the White House review, which he said was required under law to ensure any material that could compromise intelligence was not included.

"They go through it line by line," Kean said, referring to the White House review process involving intelligence issues. White House chief of Staff Andrew Card will oversee the vetting.

The commission is expected to submit its report in July on intelligence failures before the 2001 attacks. Kean said he was confident the White House would finish its review so the report could be released well before the November presidential election. Commission vice chairman Lee Hamilton vowed not to let the White House "distort" the report.

2. Suuuuurrre.
Here's an idea: why not just release the fscking thing in full when it's done, and just pass along a copy to the WH as an afterthought?

Why not grow some balls and release it publicly in defiance of the WH?

What this country needs is a South African-style Truth and Reconciliation Committee.

What we will get is a Lies and Obfuscations Committee once the White House has purged the report of anything damaging to *'s re-selection campaign.

on edit: Yup, the 9/11 committee is self-obfuscating already.

6. If it comes out before Nov
I look for it to be released about 3days before the elction at night or on the Friday before. No way will it be released with enough time to do any harm. Hopefully the American people will demand it and the Dem Convention will make it an issue and a priority so their is pressure to release it.

8. When this so-called 9/11 Commission allowed
the WH to set priorities and how they will only see the members if Cheney and Bush appear together, and I think not under oath, the Commission cried Uncle. It will have been a waste of time and money. It boils down to he said she said as far as Rice is concerned and Clarke will be totally discredited. This is still an imperial presidency and they will cover their collective ass.

12. Why isn't Bhutto being called before the 911 Commission?
Bhutto, told Bush, you are creating a Frankenstein. (Al Qaeda)

In the late 80s, Pakistan's then head of state, Benazir Bhutto, told the first President George Bush, you are creating a Frankenstein. But the warnings never quite filtered down to the cops and G-men on the streets of New York.

The Road to September 11

25. Our motive for warring in Iraq has
everything to do with...

. the protection of Israel
. the choice of wars where an assumption was made as to the feasibility of winning over a weak nation on flat land whose geography and resources fit the agenda
. the rake-off of profits
. the protection of the dollar (and corporate friends) instead of the euro in oil currency as was threatened by Hussein
. closing down bases in SA and establishing them in Iraq
. the words/agenda/intent that have come out of PNAC (who are predominantly Israel supporters) and who rule the admin who appear(ed?) ready to burst out of the gate into Syria next.

The first, re Israel, was admitted in a speech at the University of Virginia by one of the admin spokesman, Philip Zelikow, who was/is a member of PFIAB - an admin board named President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (PFIAB) which reports to Bush.

(We have the CIA, DEA, SS, FBI, and a few other intelligence departments that we hear about every day and that we know our representatives know about, then Rumsfeld has his own intelligence department that may or may not have been authorized by Congress AND the President has is own intelligence department, PFIAB and I don't know if congress has authorized it, and we have Tom Ridge and the Homeland Security that we know congress authorized).

There are many, many threads on DU about the Israel motive. Many!

15. The White reviewing process
<snip>
The commission is expected to submit its report in July on intelligence failures before the 2001 attacks. Kean said he was confident the White House would finish its review so the report could be released well before the November presidential election. Commission vice chairman Lee Hamilton vowed not to let the White House "distort" the report.
<snip>

Horse hockey, the White House would attempt to spin the review of the report holding it for six months. I would not put this past them. Just like the White House Attorneys calling the commission with questions to ask. We need a complete review of the presidential, congressional and justice powers here. That is the review we need.

They sat on it for months. And.. according to Clarke, "they took out a lot of good stuff!". In the interest of intelligence, I'm sure. Yeah.. intelligence in the interest of proving the lack of intelligence of the average American who lets them pull this shit constantly!

22. Law, Executive Order, Something
Much of what I saw on MTP today was predictable babble or side-stepping, but the notion of the commission having to submit its report to the White House prior to publication was both interesting and extremely troubling. The natural extension of the logic is that the WH has claimed the authority to quash the entire report if it sees fit.

Can someone point me to the text of the law, executive order, or some other actual publicly accessible document that illustrates "it's the law" that various people or investigative groups must submit their publications to the White House for review prior to publication?

I am assuming (dangerous I know) in Clarke's case this is based on his former position with the White House and the lack of an appropriate amount of time having passed before he's allowed by the nature of some sort of signed agreement to divulge certain information. I do not understand this in the context of an independent Congressional inquiry. Both commission members at least paid lip service to their being surprised and disturbed at the necessity of doing this, which is what set me to wondering in the first place.

I've searched the web, but I can't find anything definitive. Perhaps I'm not using the right combination of keywords, but all I come up with are issues related to prior restraint, which, when allowable for reasons of "national security," must be ordered by a court, not invoked by executive fiat. (This last appears to be a precedent set in the case of Freedman vs. The State of Maryland in a 1960's obscenity case.)

Clue me in here.

On a related note, here's a link to an excellent discussion of the history of "secrets," openness in the distributution of information, the relationship to national security, etc. The portion on the United States begins on page 33 of this .pdf document:

23. Executive Privilege Bunkum
How can the press allow these claims to endure?

The 9-11 committee is not a congressional committee.

It is an Executive committee. It was formed by Executive and members were chosen by Executive.

I cannot comprehend how this can escape the press.

27. It's likely the report will come out so redacted, and so late...
... that any kind of stinging effect it would have otherwise had will be crushed.

This White House will do anything in its power to keep the lid on this brewing, bubbling report. The only weapon we have against a redacted, late report is political pressure.

It worked on Condi. Our voices will have to be even louder at the end of July.

Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 05:26 PM by calimary
I'm just impatient, PERIOD. You are so correct that we're going to need a lot of help from the media on this one. SO, I say, START STOKING IT NOW!!!! They can't very well avoid an avalanche, can they?

Especially while these books, by critical and credible people keep coming out month-by-month. I am actually wondering who the media person is who's gonna turn. Lou Dobbs has, on the economy anyway. But it just struck me that one of these days, what with the Paul O'Neill factor, and then Clarke, then John Dean (who sorta got washed over with the tidal wave of focus on Clarke, but who says bush is IMIPEACHABLE for lying about going to war), then Bob Woodward - whose book the White House is said to be nervous about, then Joseph Wilson, which apparently is going to name the Plame Leakers, I mean - through all this, I'm wondering if there's gonna be somebody, prominent in the media, who suddenly wakes up and shrieks about this.

Just a thought. In the meantime, we've got another fire to stoke. And I say we start First Thing Monday Morning. Using the numbers and email info I've posted elsewhere on this thread. Post 29, to be exact.

38. God.. you all act so suprised... there was no way this would NOT happen...
Of course the White House is going to scrub the report first! Our only hope is that their intimidation tactics on those who have seen the full report fail, and that someone breaks silences and goes public exposing what they are keeping from the public.

I swear on everything that is holy - if I was on the commitee I would keep secret copies of that report, and if the Bush Administration tried to hide anything, I would leak it - I don't care if I want to prison or was killed. Sometimes there are things so important that they're worth it.

Our only hope is that someone else feels that strongly.

42. Twiddle our thumbs, or contact the 9/11 Commission?
No use in twiddling our thumbs while the neutered Commission goes thru the motions, at the taxpayer's expense, no less!

What a farce. What a waste. What a joke.

I just can't stand it anymore... that's why I'm gonna send 'em some white paint, to make it real for them the very blatant point that we know what they are doing (not doing).

Here's the address if anyone else wants it:

39. what a joke
Edited on Sun Apr-04-04 05:24 PM by Marianne
if it were not so sad, it would be funny.

What sense is there to watching the Condi lie in front of the panel? She will of course. It has already been billed as an event in which she will counter the "lies" of Dick Clarke.

This country is broken and it is being broken into a million pieces.

It should be quite a day when the Condi gets before this sham of a panel, with Bush's appointed shill as it's head, and lies.

I am sure we and the fanilies of the victims, will all be laughing our heads off and applauding this bitch liar as she continues to lie--and she can, because the panel has agreed not to question anyone else in the White House after the bitch takes and oath and then continures to lie to them

Be assured it will all be scripted. If cabinet meetings were scripted, surely we can expect this Bush appointed "inquiry" to be scriped also. It says a lot for these despicable Bush ass kissers. And as for Bob Kerrey--he should let go of his resentments--NOW--if he cares a whit about the fate of this denocracy. CAnnot he see where Bush is takin us?

And I wonder even if that does matter any more. Yesiree, So we see past it

--so?

Nothing to see--move along

44. I wrote about 8 of them. The white paint sounds good. I think I'll
send or take some to Mitch and Anne.
