Active U.S. criminal probe into WikiLeaks release

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Authorities are conducting an intensive criminal investigation into the release of thousands of classified U.S. documents by WikiLeaks, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said on Monday.

"There is an active, ongoing criminal investigation that we're conducting with the Department of Defense," Holder said at a news conference. "We are not in a position as yet to announce the result of that investigation."

He said Sunday's leak of the classified documents, mostly cables from U.S. embassies around the world, put at risk U.S. diplomats or other individuals assisting the United States.

"To the extent that we can find anybody who was involved in the breaking of American law and who has put at risk the assets and the people that I have described, they will be held responsible, they will be held accountable," Holder said.

He said that if there are gaps in U.S. law over the disclosure of classified information, the Obama administration would work with Congress to close them.

4. There may be grounds for charges against the individual who gave the
information to Wikileaks - but there are no grounds for charges against Wikileaks itself for distributing what was given them.

8. the govt's new tactic will probably be to copyright all of their communcations

because they figure there is more law enforcement of pirated videos & music than govt leaks - afterall, it stopped one Miss Sarah Palin's book excerpts from being posted

a bunch of horse's asses out there for sure - thank god for international media who are willing to cover real news and not run for cover any time advertising dollars might be at risk over important news coverage

12. Unfuckingbelievable.
We now have two tiers of 'rule of law.' The rich & famous have one set of laws & the rest of us another. :grr:

Rule of Law
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_law

snip...

The rule of law is a legal maxim that states no person is immune to law.

The phrase has been used since the 17th century, but the concept can be traced to ancient Greece. Aristotle put it this way: "law should govern". Rule of law stands in contrast to the idea that the sovereign is above the law (rex lex), a feature of Roman Law and other legal systems.

14. Interesting.
'"There is an active, ongoing criminal investigation that we're conducting with the Department of Defense," Holder said at a news conference.'

Why is the DoD involved? Why isn't the investigation with the State Dept?
I find it disturbing that the DoD is involved in a criminal probe at all.

16. No evidence that WikiLeaks releases have hurt anyone
By NANCY A. YOUSSEF
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON -- American officials in recent days have warned repeatedly that the release of documents by WikiLeaks could put people's lives in danger.

But despite similar warnings before the previous two releases of classified U.S. intelligence reports by the website, U.S. officials concede that they have no evidence to date that the documents led to anyone's death.

Before Sunday's release, news organizations given access to the documents and WikiLeaks took the greatest care to date to ensure no one would be put in danger. In statements accompanying stories about the documents, several newspapers said they voluntarily withheld information and that they cooperated with the State Department and the Obama administration to ensure nothing released could endanger lives or national security.

The newspapers "established lists in common of people to protect, notably in countries ruled by dictators, controlled by criminals or at war," according to an account by Le Monde, a French newspaper that was among the five news organizations that were given access to the documents. "All the identities of people the journalists believed would be threatened were redacted," the newspaper said in what would be an unusual act of self censorship by journalists toward government documents.

The newspapers also communicated U.S. government concerns to WikiLeaks to ensure that sensitive data didn't appear on the organization's website.

20. OK, investigate these crimes. And while you're at it, investigate the following:
All the crimes revealed in these documents.

The misuse of classified information. (It is not legal to keep state secrets, only to classify documents specifically for the purpose of protecting troops and public safety.)

While you're at it, please investigate the war crimes of the Bush administration, revealing Valerie Plame's identity, how about the stolen 2000 election...
