White House presses Congress for jobless benefits
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is stepping up its push for Congress to extend unemployment insurance for out-of-work Americans, linking the benefits to an extension of expiring Bush-era tax cuts.

President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers on Thursday reported that if Congress does not extend the benefits, two million unemployed workers will lose coverage this month and 7 million would lose coverage by November 2011.

The report says the benefits have a broad impact because recipients spend the money they receive and sustain employment elsewhere in the economy. The economic advisers estimate that the unemployment benefits translated into 800,000 more jobs and a gross domestic product that was 0.8 percent higher in September 2010.

12. I don't think you really mean that.
Do you want to sign away $700 billion to the rich in exchange for $18 billion in unemployment benefits?

It could be a no win situation. If they demanded that, either we give them the tax cuts, or we give up on the unemployed. And of course anything short of having all the Republican Senators dragged out into the street and shot will be branded by some people here as Obama selling out. :eyes:

5. POTUS could sign an executive order for this.
It would take 2/3 vote of Congress to undo it. He could.

8. But that would be unilateral...
and we all know that this is the bilateral president. And by bilateral, I mean the repukes tell him what they want, and he agrees.

13. Who told you that? Because it's not true.
Executive orders do have the force of law, but they are strictly limited in their scope, specifically so that the POTUS isn't walking on Congress' territory of making laws.

10. Democrats are begging for help for Americans -- Wow!!
Edited on Thu Dec-02-10 02:32 PM by defendandprotect
Is it likely millionaires and multi-millionaires in Congress will help?

There have to be better answers than this --

Has what we've done so far been working -- ????

The Democrats are begging for a hand out for Americans in need after

helping corrupt and criminal corporations with our taxpayer dollars in bailouts !!!

One of the greatest financial coups of all time --

Last I heard it was $8 trillion -- others say $12 trillion !!!

Would that have helped America and our homeless -- our unemployed ???

Ahhh .... but we have to keep our MIC going so it can routinely kill people all over

the world!!!
