Lawyers Win Battle To See Assange In Prison
Source: Sky News

Sarah Gordon, Sky News Online

Sky sources have confirmed that Julian Assange's legal team are due to meet him in Wandsworth Prison on Thursday, ahead of a court appearance on December 14.

The information comes after the lawyers for the WikiLeaks founder had complained they did not have access to their client.

The Australian spent Tuesday night in Wandsworth Prison after turning himself into police over sexual assault allegations made against him in Sweden.

Mr Assange's legal team had voiced their frustration they were not able to speak to him over the phone and would not have access to him for another five days. "We've been told we can't get to see our client in Wandsworth Prison until the 13th as they say they don't have the capacity to facilitate a legal visit until then," his solicitor Mark Stephens told Sky News.

No phone or visits? And they had to win a "battle"? WTF is going on?

5. Prisoners on remand are allowed contact...

Unconvicted Prisoners

An unconvicted prisoner is someone who is awaiting trial. That means that they are presumed innocent and apart from the duty of the prison to hold them and deliver them to court securely, an unconvicted prisoner is treated differently to convicted prisoners. Unconvicted prisoners can still vote and do not have to work in prison unless they want to. Generally, unconvicted prisoners can wear their own clothes.

Because there is a need to make sure that prisons are run in a secure and efficient way for the benefit of all prisoners and prison staff, many of the rules such as those regarding personal items and hygiene apply to unconvicted prisoners too.

However, unconvicted prisoners are given special rights and privileges.

All reasonable facilities to:

1) be able to seek release on bail and preparing for their trial
Prisoners are given help and advice on how to go about seeking release on bail. Legal Services Officers are available in the prison to give help and advice and help them get in touch with their solicitor.

=snip=

3) maintain contact with their family and friends
There are special rules for unconvicted prisoners. More details can be seen in the Keeping in Touch section on this site.

The Guardian and their comments are showing huge support for Julian Assange. One commenter stated he would personally show up if England wanted to extradite.

3. My thoughts too. I would have him checked for needle marks evertime they see him. nt
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 11:49 AM by Arctic Dave
Here me out. What is the punishment for transmitting an STD? If they could jail him for that, it still puts him away but not for the "espionage" charges, wich would make him a martyr and the PTB look like the douchebags they are. After all they put Capone away for tax evasion, not running booze.

Let me know what you think.

8. Not too far-fetched...a little HIV "discovered" in his bloodstream
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 12:10 PM by Wednesdays
and they could trump up charges of attempted murder, or some such. Course, if they could slip some HIV into him, they could slip in something that will kill him much quicker. However, the HIV thing could be used to damn him in the public eye.

I mean, we're talking about his crossing the most powerful people in history here.

It's got a built in spell check. It picks everything up and, as I type so fast, without it everyone would think I'm writing in Welsh, or something, lol.

20. Agree ... but we need less marytrs and this info to be released ...
which I doubt will happen now with Assange's life being threatened --

we have no idea what they could be doing to him --

no communication and in isolation!!

13. the EVIL Swedish Prosecutor requested he be kept "in solitary and incommunicado"
Edited on Wed Dec-08-10 01:01 PM by northernlights
I am disgusted that the UK is apparently willing to break its own laws and let the US...er, SWEDEN have its way. :grr: :grr: :grr:

Anybody who doesn't recognize this as a total setup and trap, with the intention of burying Assange in a prison somewhere, or possibly renditioning him from Sweden to god knows where for the purpose of torturing him as an example...is freakin goddam naive beyond belief.

21. Australia doesn't seem to be doing much for their citizen .... all about what US wants!!!
And that is a total shut down of this info leak --

and labeling Assange a "terrorist" and burying him in some jail somewhere!!

It's all about discouraging anyone else from trying anything like this!!

22. Have you got a link, please? I wonder what Kevin Rudd has to say about that!
In this video clip he says that he is going to make sure Julian is treated fairly, as he would with any Australian who was in a similar situation abroad (paraphrase): http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x533311

18. They could be doing anything to Assange ... for the US ... obviously
US wants to find a way to STOP any further leaks ---

If the life of Assange is threatened -- or he is being tortured ---

what will his supporters do?

That's the idea -- all in the name of this evil called the US government --

However, keep in mind that the government is those who are occupying it at the time --

it's like a typewriter -- depends on who is doing the writing.

When we look to government by millionaires and multi-millionaires to act in the

interests of the peopled, we are on a fool's errand, imo!

27. What's "going on" is terrorism by the Big Government
Simply arresting Assange wouldn't stop Wikileaks. Someone else would pick up the ball and run with it. In order to discourage his would-be successors, Big Brother will have to make an example of him - terrorize him.
