WASHINGTON — House and Senate Republicans on Wednesday thwarted Democratic efforts to award $250 checks to Social Security recipients facing a second consecutive year without a cost-of-living increase. -SNIP-

Later, the Senate voted 53-45 on a measure to bring the Social Security supplement bill to the Senate floor for debate. That was seven short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation.

4. That would have been a fun vote in the context of them denying tax cuts to 98% of all Americans

5. And I hope every dense SS recipient who voted GOP realizes what they have done.
They are ruining this country. Plain and simple. And don't give a shit.

6. They figure, "Hell, I don't have many years left,...
how bad can it get in the next 10-15 years?" I've got news for them, it may well get worse than your worst nightmares in the next TWO years! With the GOP gaining power, and a president who does little to fight them, there is no end to just how much damage will be done by 2012!

7. Why so many can't understand what the GOP is about is beyond me
Do some really like being shortchanged in favor of the rich and big corporations? Buying the "pull yourself up" line while those who got rich were often helped by government in some way?

17. Me too! It's really a stimulus! What's wrong with these repukes!
Of course they'll say in 2012 that H.R. 5987 in 2010 was defeated in a Democratic Congress! Will they ever stop?

11. Sadly
Disproportionate numbers of seniors, compared to other age brackets, especially the under 30 crowd,
will vote AGAINST their interests and vote GOP for the G, G, G issues. There are no words for this.

13. The Republican party should be outlawed. This
will be the third year for seniors to have the same amount. I would spend that $250 tomorrow! I am only going to be able to get Christmas gifts for 3 grandchildren; two will get a twenty-dollar bill and the other who is 3 will get a learning toy.

14. Why the hell would Obama even try to work with these people
They ARE the enemy - not of the Dems - but of the American people.

If he would stand and fight we could shame them into voting for these things - but for some unexplainable reason - that does not happen. The republicans know all they have to do is just say NO to everything the Dems and Obama want who respond by going - OK republicans, you've got the minority in the senate, the house, and a Dem president, but lets do it your way.

WTF?! It boggles the mind.

of this senior's support - fuck him the wealthy bastard.

Edited to add: Just sent him a blistering email telling him he's lost a supporter from when he was bidding to be our Governor and then Senator. Told him it's time to find a REAL Democrat and that he can count on be "primaried" and I'll work my ass off to help his challenger.

25. Pretty amazing when you realize it was the 65+ crowd that swept the GOP into office.
Repukes send their "thanks" only to millionaires and billionaires, their lone true constituency.

deal for the Mega Rich Tax Cuts that so much as tipped hat to the older Americans. The President got them nothing.
