Obama kicks his smoking habit

Apparently dealing with the worst financial crisis in decades, two wars, declining popularity and a shellacking at the polls has done wonders for President Obama's smoking habit - he hasn't touched a cigarette in nine months, according to the White House.

"I've not seen or witnessed evidence of any smoking in probably nine months," said Robert Gibbs, White House press secretary. "I think he has worked extremely hard. And I think he would tell you, even when, in the midst of a tax agreement and a START deal and all the other things that accumulate, that even where he might have once found some comfort in that . . . he's pushed it away. So he understands . . . its dangers and I think has done a lot of extraordinary work to wrestle with that habit, as millions of Americans have."

That Obama, who exercises six days a week and has offered not-too-fit staffers salads and suggestions to see a trainer, even has a smoking habit has always been something of head-scratcher. But the habit goes back 30 years.

Gibbs pronounced him 95 percent cured last year.

a worse mess that peaked with, "I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue."

Why do I feel that we're headed into the stopped-sniffing-glue territory with this

I cringe every time I hear it. And even when the president does it, too. Drives me up the fucking wall.

Been there, done that 4 1/2 years ago after being a 40+ year 2 pack a dayer. It's a bugger.

I wish the nannies would leave President Obama along and let him smoke in peace when he wants to.

Maybe he can kick his capitulating habit in the next 2 years.

And extending tax cuts for the wealthy that will cost more than TARP did over the next two years.

But the good news: he's quit smoking!

( 2 packs a day - 20 years - 22 years without), I gotta say great. Maybe his next problem to kick is his co-dependent relationship with the Republicans.

I'd think it'd be easier to quit if you're in the public eye. You can no longer be selfish.

What the true test would be is how long he can remain without cigarettes once his presidency is over, once he's not in the public eye as much, and when he has time to reflect on coulda, shoulda, wouldas. And I bet he'll have a lot of those.

But I do wish him luck.

But I do wish him luck in quitting. It's not easy to quit and stay quit.

at least that's what people I know tell me that have been able to quit smoking.
