Parents of NJ student who killed himself to sue (webcam spying on gay encounter)

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — The parents of a Rutgers University student who killed himself after his roommate allegedly used a webcam to spy on him during a tryst with another man have filed notice that they intend to sue the school.

Joseph and Jane Clementi, parents of Tyler Clementi, filed the notice on Friday. They have to wait six months to file the lawsuit over their son's death, which became a symbol in a national outcry over the bullying of young gays.

1. I don't know - the school's got the money, but Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei are the perpetrators
but there probably aren't hoardes of lawyers offering to sue Ravi and Wei for what little they've got.

2. Why is this the school's fault?

It's not - but they have the money?

6. Tyler had gone to the school via his RA and complained on prior occasions
but nothing was done to discipline or curtail the perpetrator. Plus allegedly, Rutgers had a policy in place that advised and guided how to deal with sexual/gender harassment and the protocols were not followed in this case, leading to Tyler's suicide.

At least, that's the gist of the Complaint.

4. IF this is taking a just cause and turning it into a coin-purse opportunity - bad form

"it appears Rutgers University failed to act, failed to put in place and/or failed to implement, and enforce policies and practices that would have prevented or deterred such acts, and that Rutgers failed to act timely and appropriately"

_____

I can't judge until the entire paperwork is released, but IF this is about anything OTHER than the University was requested to move him into a different room and didn't (or similar issues that the University had control over), then they are really going to be sinking to a new low.

Will reserve judgment entirely for now, but that statement does not make it clear otherwise

7. If this is true then the school should be sued big-time

11. there ya go -

sounds like material for a lawsuit - especially if they can determine the attempts to fix the situation fell on deaf ears

8. I don't blame the parents at all - in this society lawsuits are our only chance against corporations
(and that includes major universities like Rutgers). Good for them. I will admit a victory with proceeds (after attorney costs) going to a LGBT cause would shut people up about the "vulture" aspect of it. I hope they do that.

9. The is the shotgun lawsuit technique in effect -Bang Bang
Working with attorneys doing lawsuits, they name all the suspects, so to speak, even those with conflicting interests. The school will come down on the ones who did this.

No one is innocent until the suit is finished and all the fine points have been hashed out in depositions. Punishment will be determined by the percentages they work out behind closed doors.

I doubt the law will act this way, but would like to see some kind of sex offender status applied to the students who put this on the net. Since they put it online for their own gain. Material or not, we don't know. But it was without permission and harmful for that reason.

Of course human decency, common courtesy and respect don't seem to count for anything with these two hyenas who put this out there for their howler monkey friends. What a waste of education. Can anyone imagine working alongside these folks?

{I apologize to all hyenas and howler monkeys everywhere in case they're reading this thread...}
