MADRID (Reuters) - The Spanish government called for calm as troops and police patrolled potential targets after a series of bombings and a purported al Qaeda threat to create rivers of blood in Spain.

Frontpage newspaper pictures on Tuesday showed combat troops guarding a dam, adding to the feeling of a country under siege.

Police were deployed on Madrid's metro on Monday, a job normally left to private guards, and troops were dotted along the route of the high-speed Madrid-Seville rail line that was the target of a foiled bomb attack last week.

Spain has ramped up security since 191 people were killed when suspected Islamic militants bombed four commuter trains in Madrid on March 11.

1. Threat was issued right when police surrounded the apartment
The fax was dated Saturday, 6:02pm when it was received by (conservative) newspaper ABC - that was the same moment when police surrounded the apartment building where the 5 (maybe even six) terrorists were holed up.

The thing is that witnesses saw at least one person run away - and El Mundo reported that one person left the apartment to take the trash out, when he/she saw the police, then ran away and later called to tip the others in the apartment off about what was unfolding outside. Which explains why police was “welcomed” by terrorists shooting from the windows of the apartment.

In other words, it's still possible that the fax was sent from the apartment.
