Biden says gay marriage 'inevitable'

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden said Friday that the country is evolving on the issue of gay marriage and he thinks it's inevitable there will be national consensus.

He said on ABC's "Good Morning America" the same thing is happening with the issue of marriage that happened with gays' service in the military.

Changes in attitudes by military leaders, those in the service and the public allowed the repeal by Congress of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that will eventually allow gays to serve openly in the military.

Biden said there is "an inevitability for a national consensus on gay marriage."

"I think the country's evolving," he said. "And I think you're going to see, you know, the next effort is probably going to be to deal with so-called DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). He said he agreed with Obama that his position in gay marriage is "evolving."

So he says he supports it, then fails to get elected. Then we have no DADT repeal, and won't have any progress towards gay marriage. His politicking here is not 'right' or 'wrong'.

A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs.

If he isn't against gay marriage, then he must have made the statement in order to appease the homophobics on both sides of the aisle. On the other hand, he does tend to let things happen that he claims not to support, and maybe gay marriage will be one of those things. I hope so.

20. I suspect that his plan all along has been to go after this in his 2nd term
If he ran on this in 2008, he would have LOST.

He is runs on it in 2012, he'd "likely" lose. But, the American people are turning more and more in this direction. Don't be surprised to see Michelle talking about it more too.

I think his stated position will "evolve" during his 2nd term because he understands the politics.

Run on it in 2008 and get nothing ... make the shift in steps, like doing DADT first, and get it sooner than if you lost the election.

10. evolving views is how you convince people.
My position used to be "why are we evening talking about it" it 2004. I thought 2 wars deficit etc more important things need to be dealt with. When a close friend of mine came out I realized that marriage equality for the GLBT community is a pressing civl rights issue and smacked myself in the back of the head for not realizing it sooner.

Every time I see a thread with a title containing the words "Biden says", I cringe.

The position should never have required evolution to begin with, to oppose and ultimately deny one human being's right to join with another in marriage is oppression and bigotry, it always has been so.

I'm glad that they may finally be ready to stop being bigots though.

have learned to listen and to respect his telling it like is and think for themselves rather than jump on that tired old "gaffe" bandwagon.

I just wonder, were you cringing when Biden fought to NOT escalate in Afghanistan? Or did you tune out because you've made up mind and follow the pack?

should have been president. His sense of the Constitution and Justice would have allowed an investigation into

everything he knew about Bush and His Violations.

You could see that in Joe. His passion. Watching him in the Senate Hearings, his depth of emotion.

So sad.

That's the funny thing with minority rights. There doesn't need to be a consensus. The majority almost never favors rights for minority groups. With all due respect VPOTUS, waiting for a national consensus doesn't seem to be the most just course of action here.

In each and every country on the planet in which same sex marriage is legal, there is not one case of marriage becoming legal until after LGBT citizens were accepted into their country's military. Yes... we are inevitable. 'Bout damn time.

17. The administration is wisely pivoting to this question.
In fact, this is a good trap to lay for the Republicans. They do NOT want to talk about this question, for it imperils their whole tactical alliance with a swath of "independents" who happen to be more socially progressive than the average Democrat. That would be the beginning of the end for them.
