Major winter storm barrels up East Coast
Source: AP

By KRISTIN M. HALL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A winter storm that brought a rare white Christmas to parts of the South barreled up the East Coast on Saturday night, with forecasters predicting 6 to 10 inches of snow Sunday for Washington and blizzard conditions for New York City and the New Jersey shore.

Virginia and North Carolina declared states of emergency as crews tried to clear snowy and icy highways. Authorities in Mid-Atlantic states spent Christmas Day preparing for up to a foot of snowfall. And airlines began canceling flights in the Northeast corridor before the intensifying storm descended on the region.

The storm was already scrambling the plans of holiday travelers along the Eastern Seaboard. Motorists will be facing treacherous road conditions in many states Sunday with blowing snow and low visibility, and the snow is likely to strand many air travelers. Continental Airlines canceled 250 departures from Newark Liberty International Airport outside New York City.

"Our concern is tomorrow it's going to get significantly colder," Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell told The Weather Channel. "Winds with gusts up to 45 miles per hour will cause blowing snow and that's going to cause the worst of it ... and we're urging extreme caution in travel. Try to get home early and if you don't have to travel don't go."

18. And it has begun.
Dusting of snow already on the ground, four hours earlier than anticipated.

This is not going to be fun.

21. Just north of you. Not only is it snowing now, the wind is
howling. Maybe we'll be lucky this time. Blizzard warnings immediately bring my thought back to 1978.
No cars on the road, walk only. Eight foot drift in my back yard, could not see out any of my first floor windows. Folks skiing up the main streets. Fun for the kids, agony for the rest of us.
Bah Humbug. This is not the best way to end a great holiday weekend.

10. Anthropogenic:: derived from human activities --
You sent me to the dictionary --

but thanks for sticking with "Global Warming" vs climate change --

btw, Frank Luntz -- notable GOP propagandist -- suggested that name change to

W in 2002 --

It is Global Warming, however, which makes clear what we are talking about is HEAT --

HEAT which creates chaotic weather conditions -- and even earthquakes.

The Dems had just gotten started on some Global Warming hearings which sadly now

will be discontinued by GOP, I'm sure!

One of the witnesses said that we now have 2 hot days for every 1 cold day --

and that by 2050, outlook is for 21 hot days for every 1 cold day --

Where does that leave us for 2025 .... 10 hot days for every 1 cold day???

11. Snow heads for D.C.; 6 to 10 inches predicted
Source: Washington Times

Heavy snow has been predicted for the nation's capital on Sunday from a storm that gave a rare white Christmas to parts of the South and caused airlines to cancel hundreds of flights on Saturday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Jared Klein on Saturday said the storm could dump 6 to 10 inches on the Washington area by the time it is finished.

The weather service issued a winter storm warning Saturday afternoon for the D.C. region, beginning Sunday morning and running through Monday, saying the chance of snow in the area for Sunday is near 100 percent.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said it is monitoring the forecast in the Washington region and has crews on standby to remove snow from Metro station entrances and platforms if necessary.

but if it's in Boston already, I think it will be here early as well.

What pisses me off is that since late October I've been trying to get the gas appliance guy out to fix my backup direct vent heater. I've reached him twice -- 1st time was supposed to call me back to set up appointment and never did. 2nd time set up appointment and he stood me up.

So now if I lose power, I have no heat except my gas range and oven. Not good. Not good at all. :(

Guess I'd better get moving...chores I thought I had all day, I'll want done early so we can get hunkered down.

26. Winds may reach 60 MPH and coastal flooding is now feared from blizzard

This afternoon, the NWS Service updated a coastal flood warning that has been in effect for the past several hours. In an alert sent out around 2:30 p.m., the weather service said the entire Massachusetts coast is going to be impacted by the storm.
“This will result in widespread moderate coastal flooding,’’ the weather service said in the coastal flood warning posted on weather.gov. There will be “pockets of major coastal flooding during the early morning (3:30 a.m.) high tide cycle.’’

The stormy weather is also expected to cause significant beach erosion along the coastline. Minor flooding may take place during the afternoon high tide on Monday, the weather service said.

Coming in to work this morning, I wondered if it was Sunday. Near deserted streets.

My bike is happy that it isn't stuck indoors. That means I don't have to take the bloody train.
