Iraq Situation Prompts Comparisons with Vietnam
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20040406/pl_nm/iraq_usa_support_dc&cid=615&ncid=1480

<snip>
"You're starting to hear that 'Q' word -- quagmire," said pollster John Zogby, using a term synonymous to Americans with the war that tore the country apart politically and socially in the 1960s and early 70s and drove President Lyndon B. Johnson from office.

"The public seems confused," Zogby said. "How do we get out? Do we send more troops? How do we cut casualties? It's all becoming a big problem for Bush."

Supporters of the Republican president and his Iraq policy have always scoffed at Vietnam comparisons, and few things could be more damaging to his re-election effort against Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) than if Vietnam imagery took hold in the public mind.

In any case, polls show a sharp decline in support for the U.S. occupation.

2. "The public seems confused"
So what else is new?

However, it is good that the priorities are straight, since the real concern here is how all this killing and chaos will affect a political election.

4. Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam

This is why discussion of Kerry and Bush's Vietnam histories is so good for us -- not only because Kerry's record is so much more admirable, but because it reminds people that Bush did not learn Vietnam's lessons and is repeating the same mistakes in Iraq.

8. The US Media will try to liken the Iraq War to the Vietnam War...
Edited on Tue Apr-06-04 02:03 PM by KansDem
...in an attempt to blur the real horror of this war. Unlike US Presidents during Vietnam, Bush was selected and does not represent the will of the majority of those who voted. At least Johnson and Nixon were elected and, as such, Americans felt, for what its worth, they had a vested interest in the outcome of the Vietnam War since they put the Commander in Chief in charge. Even if you didn't vote for the winner, there was a "we're all in this together" mindset, brought on by the idea that "majority rules." But with Bush, his "victory" in 2000 does not come with the "stakeholders" that a majority would have brought. The Supreme Court should have realized this and not installed Bush as the pResident.

When I hear or read that Bush is facing a crisis with Iraq (among many things), my response is "F**k you, Bush! You and yours brought this on yourselves, and I hope you rot in Hell for it. Don't come whining to me/us about your "problems." I don't feel any responsibility for his mess. Then I think of all the lives he's ruined on both sides of the world and I am ashamed and saddened.

I know they won't, but the media should constantly remind us that Bush's election was a coup and, as such, does not represent the will of the American people; Bush's problems are his own, not America's. We can attempt to put a stop to this insanity, but we better damn well hold Bush and his ilk accountable!

(edited to correct tense)
