Baghdad Sunnis, Shi'ites Unite (Herald Sun)
<snip>

SUNNI and Shi'ite residents of two Baghdad suburbs, once fierce enemies, said overnight they had put their differences aside to unite in their fight to oust the US occupying force from Iraq.

"All of Iraq is behind Moqtada al-Sadr, we are but one body, one people," declared Sheikh Raed al-Kazami, in charge of the radical Shi'ite cleric's offices at a mosque in the Shi'ite neighbourhood of Kazimiya, west of the Iraqi capital. He spoke following three days of fierce clashes between militiamen loyal to Sadr that left at least 57 people dead and 236 wounded.

Al-Kazami said residents of the Sunni neighbourhood of Adhamiya, a stone's throw from Kazimiya, had offered their support, as had residents from Ramadi and Fallujah, west of Baghdad, as well as residents of the northern city of Mosul.

The Muslim cleric, surrounded by armed bodyguards, said some Sunnis had even offered to join Sadr's militia.

1. "offered their support"
Well since many Sunnis have already been less than supportive of the U.S. I'm sure they are on board. What's that Arabic saying about the enemy of my cousin?

18. Would you kindly teach our ignoramous leadership, media and people,...
,...that reality!!!! THEY DO NOT GET IT!!! The Iraqi people want their country back and will retaliate against a US-corporate-controlled occupation.

Kindly tell everyone to get off the "stay the course" bullshit when the course is f*cked-up!!!

Someone,...please inform the public that, if US corporations don't get their greedy asses either out or make the Iraqi citizens beneficiaries,...and if the US leadership fails to incorporate the belligerents and recalcitrants,...this illegal war will become a nightmare that humanity DOES NOT WANT!!!

33. Yep. That Shia/Sunni/Kurd thing is all taken care of.
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend" was invented there. Once the common enemy is gone...

3. So ....
It took the misguided, Messianic impulses of the Neocon/PNAC White House to unite the Sunni/Shiite factions of Islam ...

After TEN CENTURIES of enmity and mutual hatred ....

The Bush Team at least have SOMETHING to hang their hat on ...

7. take with a grain of salt
It's an al-Sadr supporter who is claiming this, mind you.

Zell Miller would have the world believe that Democrats have "united" behind B*sh - but we all know the facts on the ground are much different.

When a major Sunni leader announces that they've joined ranks with the al-Sadrists, then we know we're several miles up shit creek and the paddle is long gone.

34. Al-Sadr has been making connections with the Sunnis for a while
Here's something that originally appeared in the Washington Post last August:

"A popular Sunni Muslim cleric has provided grass-roots and financial support to a leading anti-American Shia cleric, a rare example of cooperation across Iraq’s sectarian divide that has alarmed US officials for its potential to bolster festering resistance to the American occupation, senior US and Iraqi officials say.

"The ties mark one of the first signs of coordination between anti-occupation elements of the Sunni minority, the traditional rulers of the country, and its Shia majority, seen by US officials as the key to stability in postwar Iraq.

"The extent of the cooperation remains unclear between Ahmed Kubeisi, a Sunni cleric from a prominent clan in western Iraq, and Moqtada Sadr, the 30-year-old son of a revered ayatollah assassinated in 1999. But practically, it represents a convergence of interests between the two figures, who were left out of the Iraqi Governing Council named last month and, in their own communities, have emerged as influential if still minority voices of opposition to the occupation."

Each Iraqi killed by the coalition just hardens the hearts of the people to the occupation. The chimp was warned, but they were drunk with their fantasies.

Welcome to our worst nightmare. It was only a matter of time before the Sunnis and Shiites took advantage of Saddam's abscence, joined forces against Bush's troops, forced them out, then turned on each other. And there were DU-ers saying this would happen a freaking YEAR AND A HALF AGO!!!

25. Nope... Missed Vietnam And Being Drafted By One Year !!!
But then I don't advocate death and destruction as a way to solve problems. With a few exceptions, it has a rather poor track record for the most part.

And I definitely don't support a non-serving AWOL Commander-In-Thief and his non-serving 'I had other priorities during Vietnam' co-cowboy sending hohnorable men and women to their deaths in a country that did not attack us.

Do you???

BTW - Thank you for your service.

28. It took HOURS after this post for the media to clear the confusion...
... about this issue. CNN kept referring to "'conflicting reports,' some are saying the insurgents are Sunnis, other sources say the attacks were conducted by Shi'ite followers of al-Sadr."

Why don't those crackerjack researchers at CNN read the same links we do?? They could have broken this story. Instead, they didn't even understand the magnitude of what had happened, which was clearly reported in this article and post.

Unbelievable.
