Ex-pastor could get up to 5 years for sex with teen

NEWARK, Ohio— The former pastor of a Millersport church pleaded no contest and was found guilty yesterday of having sex with a 16-year-old member of his congregation.

In Licking County Common Pleas Court, Daniel L. Monk, 47, of Hebron, was indicted in September on two felony counts of sexual battery and a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was arrested after a woman called police and told them Monk had been having an inappropriate relationship with her teenage daughter.

Monk had been counseling the girl during her parents' divorce in his role as pastor of Souls Harbor Pentecostal Church.

Monk and the girl arranged to meet via text messages, and the pastor admitted having sex with the girl twice between April30 and Sept. 1, Hebron Police Lt. Larry Brooks said after the arrest.

Daniel L. Monk, the pastor of a Millersport church, was arrested and charged with sexual battery after having sex with a 16 year old girl. The victim was a member of Monk's church, Souls Harbor Pentacostal Church, and was being counseled by Monk in relation to her parents' divorce.

The age of consent in Ohio is 16, but the Ohio Revised Code also offers protections for minors in a variety of circumstances including (in section 2902.03(A)(12)) when the victim is a minor in the congregation over which the perpetrator is a cleric.In this case, sexual battery is a felony in the third degree, which carries a prison sentence of 1-5 years.

It appears that Monk and the girl would arrange meetings via text message, and Monk admitted to having sex with the teenager on two occasions. Monk was arraigned on Monday the 20th, and he is now free on a $35,000 bond.

This is an interesting statute.

§ 2907.03. Sexual battery.


(A) No person shall engage in sexual conduct with another, not the spouse of the offender, when any of the following apply:

* * * *

(12) The other person is a minor, the offender is a cleric, and the other person is a member of, or attends, the church or congregation served by the cleric.

Didn't know about the statutory prohibition against having sex with members of his 'flock'. Bit him in the ass. Good.
