Lawmakers recite Constitution on House floor
Source: Washington Post

And let it be said, on this second day following the convening of the 112th Congress, newly sworn members of the House shall stand and read aloud the Constitution of the United States.

And so it was Thursday, as lawmakers took turns reciting each verse and article of the document. Republicans in charge of the chamber rattled it off with missionary zeal, as if in a school civics class. Democrats pitched in, but with seemingly less ardor.

Well, at least they can read. But I don't think people are concerned that they can't read the Constitution, they are worried that Republicans don't understand or even care what it means.

I would like to see a written test administered next week like they give public school students. And if House members fail, they can blame the House "teachers" and demand they be fired. :sarcasm:

1. I was thinking that they need to have a couple of professors there that could interperet for them
Reading is one thing, comprehending and understanding is another.

5. They don't need professors.
My comment on http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/plantwomyn/tea-party-influence-in-go_n_802552_72246729.html

“This is how the Democrats should participate:

Will the Congressman yield for a question?
Will the Congressman identify who is responsible in his/her state to ensure that their state has a "well regulated Militia"?
Will the Congressman elaborate on what the definition of .....?
Will the Congressman explain what the founders meant by "no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

I could go on and on but you get my drift. Stop them and question their understanding of the MEANING of the words. What effect the words have on their constituents and the rest of the American people. Get your staff busy looking up the bills these guys have tried to pass and ask them if that bill was constitutional under the article they just read.
Hell the Patriot act alone could take up a whole day.
This could be fun!”

6. You can blame home schooling and private charters for that
Pick up some right wing religious text books - any of them from k-12 that "teach" about the Constitution. It's completely different from what is taught in public schools or college. That's why there was a war on "liberal" colleges. It's chilling and eerie. The US has a population with 2 different understandings and facts. There is a right wing movement (and colleges) specifically for placing students in political positions. They have their own media. There is no such organization or discipline for reasonable and rational people.

3. Why did the Republicans read the Constitution out loud on
the first day of Congress of 2011?

Because they never learned to read silently.
