Prosecution orders arrest of former intelligence chief
Thursday, 06 January 2011 22:37 Adriaan Alsema

Colombia's Prosecutor General ordered the arrest of Jorge Noguera, a former director of Colombia's state intelligence agency DAS, for the his alleged involvement in the illegal spying on government opponents.

Noguera, who was director of the DAS between 2002 and 2006, is suspected of having set up the illegal activities of the DAS that included wiretapping supreme court magistrates, journalists, human rights organizations and opposition politicians.

The investigation has led to the criminal investigation of three former DAS directors, the chief of staff of former President Alvaro Uribe, the former press secretary and Uribe's personal advisor, Jode Obdulio Gaviria, but none of these suspects in the wiretap scandal have an arrest warrant.

It's not the first time Noguera is sent to jail; he was sent and released from jail twice for his alleged involvement in the infiltration of members of paramilitary organization AUC in the intelligence agency. He has not been convicted for this.
