In wake of Arizona rampage, two lawmakers say they will carry firearms in home states

(NewsCore) - In the wake of Saturday’s deadly shooting rampage in Arizona that left a congresswoman critically injured, two lawmakers said they would begin carrying guns with them in their home states, Politico reported Sunday.

Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), both of whom hold conceal and carry permits, said they would carry their firearms with them when they appear in public in their home districts. The lawmakers said they would not carry the guns while in Washington, D.C.

“You never think something like this will happen, but then it does,” said Shuler, who received a serious death threat in 2009. “After the elections, I let my guard down. Now I know I need to have on me. We’re going to need to do a much better job with security at these events.”

Shuler said he would boost security at events in his district and added he is encouraging his staffers to acquire conceal and carry permits.

Chaffetz said he would look into whether the US Marshals could be used to provide security for members of Congress during events in their districts, Politico reported. The Utah congressman also said he may ask local police to attend his town hall meetings. Chaffetz said he received threatening messages on his Twitter account after Saturday's shooting, and said he asked police to investigate.

1. Congress people shouldn't have trouble getting local police to their events.
If they ask.

4. I don't like the idea of them carrying guns for protection...
Chances are if they would happen to become targets they wouldn't have time to draw their gun....This will escillate the madness....We do not need more guns at political events we need NO guns.

7. They could put a target on their chest.
The guys who do this are crazy, so it's better to put a really sturdy frying pan underneath, and a bullseye on top. The gun nut would aim at the target, and the bullets would bounce off the frying pan. Just in case, I would put a few guys in the crowd carrying those tazer guns.

Having a shootout would really be dumb. There's the issue of bystanders getting shot, and then there's a question of whether one should give up and fight violence with similar violence. Like I told a friendly TSA frisker while filing a complaint, I'd rather get blown up than go through the indignity of constant TSA searches.

Much better than having everyone in America arming themselves and
