Clinton's Aids deal snubs Bush plan

The former US president Bill Clinton yesterday took a swipe at the Bush administration's close relationship with American pharmaceutical giants by announcing a deal to enable poor countries to buy cheap generic drugs and testing equipment for Aids, rather than the US companies' more expensive wares.

The deal with five generic drug companies will bring the cost of Aids drugs down to $140 (£76) per person per year and cut the cost of testing equipment by 80%.

Yesterday the UN's Global Fund - which grants money to poor countries to buy drugs - the World Bank and Unicef signed an agreement with the Clinton Foundation to provide the cash and assistance.

The move runs counter to the thrust of the Bush administration's $15bn anti-Aids plan. It has become increasingly clear in recent months that the administration wants to pay only for drugs made by the big US-based pharmaceutical companies. It has been accused of trying to undermine confidence in the generic copies.

1. the same way they undermine confidence in Canadian pharmacies, suggesting
that purchasing over the border would somehow bring impure drugs into the market.

4. Same here!
I want to cry at how the Rethugs and Fundies treated Clinton.
We will never know all the good he could have done for our country if he hadn't been distracted by all the Monica stuff.

I personally blame the whole Republican party for 911. If they hadn't cared more about a sex scandal than a terrorist attack congress could have paid more attention to bin Laden. They obstructed our government from doing it's business at a perilous time in history.

7. I LOVE That Man, What An Amazing Person!
You know, say what you want about Clinton, but now that he's not President he could sit back and just rake in the cash by doing cushy things like making speeches, writing a book, whatever. But THIS is what he's doing, he's STILL helping people even when he doesn't have to and has NOTHING to gain. He doesn't need the PR from this and I'm sure there's no extraordinary (if any) monetary profit either. He's just a damn good person who wants to make the world a better place.

Fuck everybody who thinks otherwise. Stuff like this is proof positive in my book.

8. Clinton Foundation is now AIDS center for UN/World Bank/Global Fund/UNICEF
So while Bush does nothing, the 16 African and Caribbean countries already getting cheaper drugs through the Clinton Foundation will now be joined by recipients of World Bank, Global Fund or UNICEF funding.

I wonder if the 6 o'clock news will mention this?
