Wikileaks cannot survive further losses: Assange

PARIS, Tuesday 11 January 2011 (AFP) - Wikileaks founder Julian Assange said the besieged whistleblower website "cannot survive" if it continues to haemorrhage money, in an interview broadcast in France on Tuesday.

Assange, who has enraged the United States by leaking US diplomatic cables that embarrassed world leaders, has said his site has been losing almost half a million euros (650,000 dollars) a week since those leaks began.

"We cannot survive the way things are going," he told the French radio station Europe 1, complaining that the organisation's ability to garner online donations has been blocked. But he vowed Wikileaks would fight back. In a separate interview with France Info radio, he said Wikileaks aimed to continue leaking documents.

"The organisation is being attacked but it is growing quite quickly," Assange told Europe 1.

In an interview published Monday in Swiss newspapers, Assange said Wikileaks was losing more than 480,000 euros since it started publishing the diplomatic cables. "To continue our business, we would need to find a way or other to get this money back," he said.

2. it would seem to me that since
the initial charge of sexual misconduct wasn't moving fast enough, the only way the bankers could do anything quicker was to cut off funds.

which goes to show that there is more to te wikileaks revelations than the governments would like to let on.

7. Stupid question, perhaps, but:
...How does operating Wikileaks cost $650K per week? That's nearly $34 million per year.

14. Yes--no money paid to Bradley Manning's Defense Fund--

Quite a bit of dispute about the amount promised, and no proof of payment, yet.

I've not been able to find a more recent source.

10. I was just about to type that
exact same question.

$34 million per year?

If he owned a crap load of servers and paid for the data lines (and big ones to boot) (a qualified) maybe.

Based upon what I have read about his site, he could quite easily be running off a lightweight bunch of servers and getting mirrored all over the place (mirroring is essentially a no cost way of increasing capacity)

17. Um....why do you all think Assange is in this business?? For the free donuts?
It's for the cha-ching. For the $$$. For the dollars. For the Euros. For the moo-la.

Yet he always claims he is broke and losing money, blah blah blah.

The guy can get his hands on some of the most sensitive data in the world yet can't figure out how to set up a secret bank account in his friends name, and still nothing sounds suspicious about this to most people here?!?!?
