Congress quietly prepares to renew Patriot Act
By David Edwards and Stephen Webster
Thursday, January 13th, 2011 -- 5:30 pm

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) has introduced a little-noticed bill that intends to once again renew controversial provisions of the Bush administration's USA Patriot Act that are due to expire this year.

When the act was first signed into law, Congress put in some "sunset" provisions to quiet the concerns of civil libertarians, but they were ignored by successive extensions. Unfortunately, those concerns proved to be well founded, and a 2008 Justice Department report confirmed that the FBI regularly abused their ability to obtain personal records of Americans without a warrant.

The only real sign of strong opposition to the act was in 2005, when a Democratic threat to filibuster its first renewal was overcome by Senate Republicans.

Since the bill introduced by Rogers on Jan. 5 was virtually identical to the extension passed last year, its passage was seen as likely.

77. So, by that logic
If Congress makes it worse somehow, "it's not the same bill" where a campaign promise involved?

We may as well just say that campaign promises are optional once a politician gets into office.

Congress actually made it better, and re-wrote some sections that were found to be unconstitutional or poorly worded.

What has been changed that makes it OK now?

BTW, Mike Rogers is a complete and total jerk, who has done irreperable harm to Michigan. His name alone as the sponsor of a bill should cause Obama to consider a veto.

NSL's now require greater oversight, as do roving taps, sneak and peek had a definite time limit added, etc.

They won't listen to a word we say since we're not in their cult.

Insert picture of --someone with their thumbs in their ears and their tongue stuck out at you --here.

Add soundtrack --'Everything you say falls off me and sticks to you!' or 'La-la-la, I can't hear you!'

They reject all information from heretics who don't follow their gods.

I don't think Obama will do anything to oppose the Patriot Act. Frankly I think it has too much support in the house and senate and that he's afraid of the right labeling him as weak on terror.

I truly hope he proves me wrong, but I'm expecting more of the same on this one.

This is something that should bring together left, right, and libertarians.

85. Apparently the word "Conservative" has lost flavor with the Cato Institute perhaps
because of this Orwellian, Big Brother, Constitution raping piece of legislation passed by the so call opponents of "Big Government," when they were in power.

The only significant opposition came from the Democrats; in 2005, perhaps it's no coincidence, they took back the Congress the following year for the first time since 1994.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/01/congress-quietly-prepares-renew-patriot-act/

The only real sign of strong opposition to the act was in 2005, when a Democratic threat to filibuster its first renewal was overcome by Senate Republicans.

A prior version of this article identified the Cato Institute as "conservative-leaning." In an email to Raw Story, they asked to instead be described instead as "libertarian."

I truly wonder about the merits of so called "centrism;" all it does is play the people against them selves under the false belief that a two party system actually exists.

Thanks for the thread, Judi Lynn.
