Hi everyone. In an effort to reduce the number of duplicate posts, and to provide a cohesive method of keeping track of the rising casualty counts, please use this thread for posting both confirmed and unconfirmed numbers of casualties from battles that occurred yesterday and are occurring today in Iraq.

US marines lost at least 12 dead in their worst single toll in Iraq this year as occupation forces on Wednesday battled Shiite and Sunni opponents and US President George W. Bush vowed to crush those he called “thugs and killers”.

Another 54 Iraqis were reported killed in the past 24 hours in fighting which, since Sunday, has resulted in well over Iraqi 100 dead.

Most of the clashes have been between US-led troops and militiamen of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr, but at least 30 Sunni Iraqis have been killed in a separate US operation in Fallujah.

In a briefing in Baghdad on Wednesday, US Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt vowed to destroy Sadr’s Mehdi Army, which has been banned by the occupation authorities.

“We will attack to destroy the Mehdi Army,” Kimmitt said, echoing the unmoving stance of Bush.

“We will not be shaken by the thugs and terrorists,” Bush said in a speech earlier. “These killers don’t have values ... We face tough action in Iraq but we will stay the course...

What's the line about truth being the first casuality in war?

Lunaville has 37 Americans killed this month, two "other" coalition members for an average of 5.57 per day...

on the radio to try to get the tally of how many we lost yesterday and no radio station has the balls to state the truth. I guess they are all waiting for some other station to break it first. I've read from 12 to 30 to even more. I'm sure every other country on the planet will know before the people here at home do.

I'm watching retired Gen. McCaffrey on MSNBC and they are showing a map of all the insurgency and all the fighting and talking about how it is going to get worse... I don't want anyone to die, but it is hard to believe there aren't any deaths.

I can see why they're suppressing them right now, but as heavy and widespread as the fighting is now, I'd say there is a very good chance that we're getting our ass kicked.

They have been couped up, some for 12 - 15 months, they're tired, disspirited, they have been shot at and blown-up for all the time over there, they have no breaks and are probably stretched to their limits - then they are pushed into a shit-storm. I don't see how they are holding up as well as they are. These young soldiers and NG (clerks, real-estate agents, teachers, small-town cops) need to be gotten out of there. Some one needs to save them before it's too late.

my husband just came back 2 weeks ago. I saw just how thin and malnourished he is.

Edit: let me correct that. I don't know how they feel, but I have heard first hand about the hell and seen the havoc it wreaks on the soldiers' bodies.

And I doubt that's what you heard. It was probably something more like: Fighting since the weekend has claimed the lives of 30 American troops.

Which is true. The Marines so far have grudglingly nodded to one (yep, ONE) KIA in the Fallujah operation. The 4 Marines killed late Monday night were not killed in the Fallujah operation, according to the Pentagon, but in an IED attack just west of Baghdad (yes, I know Fallujah is "just west of Baghdad," but they deliberately distinguished that from the Fallujah fighting).

There is no confirmed report that 30 Marines have been killed in the Fallujah fighting. In all the "heavy fighting," the marines have claimed 1 (yes, ONE) KIA for the entire Fallujah operation.

...but I know what I heard. My husband heard it too and I asked him, "did I just hear that?" And he said "yes".

I hope I AM wrong, but I know what I heard.

60 Iraqis Killed In Fallujah Fighting Overnight-Hospital

FALLUJAH, Iraq (AP)--Fighting overnight between U.S. forces and Iraqi insurgents killed 60 Iraqis and wounded more than 130, hospital officials said Wednesday.

Marines and gunmen were engaged in heavy battles in the Dubat neighborhood on the eastern side of Fallujah and in other part in the center of the city, witnesses said. U.S. warplanes opened fire on groups of Iraqis in the street.

Rocket-propelled grenade fire set a U.S. Humvee ablaze, injuring soldiers inside, witnesses said.

Among the dead were 26 people - including 16 children and up to eight women - killed when warplanes struck four houses late Tuesday, said Hatem Samir, head of the clinic at Fallujah Hospital. Others were killed in street battles before dawn and into the day Wednesday.

Messages from mosque loudspeakers called for "jihad," or holy war. Some gunmen in the street were seen carrying mortars, and some women carried automatic weapons.

Hundreds of U.S. Marines and Iraqi police have surrounded Fallujah, west of Baghdad, since Monday in a largescale operation aimed at uprooting Sunni Arab guerrillas behind attacks on U.S. troops.

The AC-130 is a nasty, nasty weapon (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/ac-130.htm) that annihilates pretty much everything in it's sights. It is not a 'precision' weapon, i.e. they are NOT worried about 'collateral damage'.

encountering "spotty resistance" as the Misadministration has been claiming since day one. The AC-130 is used in serious combat scenarios, and like the previous DUer stated, they are not a precision weapon, so collateral damage may be tremendous.

BAGHDAD, April 7 (Xinhuanet) -- One US Soldier was killed and another wounded Tuesday evening north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, the US military said on Wednesday.

COALITION UPDATE

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Attacks killed 15 Coalition service members April 6 and 7. The casualties occurred in the following incidents:

Twelve U.S. Marines died battling anti-Coalition forces in Ar Ramadi April 6.

One Ukrainian soldier was killed and five were wounded when their patrol was attacked by small-arms fire in Al Kut at about 11:45 a.m. April 6. The condition of the wounded is unknown.

One 1st Infantry Division soldier was killed and another wounded during a counter-fire mission at Logistics Support Area Anaconda near Balad at about 8:35 p.m. April 6. The wounded soldier was medically evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany and is in stable condition. The incident is under investigation.

One Task Force 1st Armored Division soldier was killed by rocket- propelled-grenade fire at about 6:30 a.m. April 7 as his convoy conducted a relief in place of the security forces guarding the Diala Police Station in Baghdad. The soldier's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Many killed in US attacks on Falluja

Fierce street battles are raging in Falluja between resistance fighters defending the town and US occupation forces.

Hospital sources said at least 52 Iraqis were killed and 90 injured in attacks on the besieged town on Wednesday, including 40 people inside the Abd al-Aziz al-Samari mosque.

Among the casualties were a family sitting in a car parked behind the mosque.

American forces said those killed were fighters taking refuge in the mosque. A US marine was also shot dead near the mosque by the fighters.

Over 53 Iraqis died in attacks overnight on the town which was sealed off on Sunday by US forces.Twenty-five of those killed were from one family.

"More than 200 Iraqis, including women and children, were injured in the past 24 hours," said Aljazeera correspondent in Falluja, Ahmad Mansur.

The correspondent said F16 jet fighters bombarded the eastern side of the town. He quoted witnesses as saying that a US helicopter was shot down and a tank set on fire.

The only hard numbers that the DoD has released are 12 marines from yesterday and 1 or 2 elsewhere. Given the widespread nature of the situation, the casualty #'s should've logically increased, but they haven't since yesterday.

Rumsfeld and Myers (or Rummy & Dummy) are going to have a press conference @ 3:30. We'll have to see what they have to say...:shrug:

As others have noted, it's more than a little curious that the death toll continues to rise, if you look around long enough, but there are no easily found stories that seem to be reporting anything but Iraqi deaths ... as though Iraqi deaths are acceptable.

The stories today all repeat the exact same stories of the Sunday Monday and Tuesday fights. There really has been no reports of any of the battles on Wednesday. It is now about 6am Thursday there and still no real updates of what has happened Wednesday.

The other shoe is about to fall

According to Stratfor's teaser paragraph

U.S. forces have fired upon a mosque in central Iraq and have seized another in an effort to flush out Shiite insurgents. These separate but related incidents will lend a seeming justification not only to jihadists in Iraq, but also to al Qaeda.

I do not have a subscription to Stratfor, but from the teaser it appears it has been a very busy day yesterday. I wonder if we will ever be told about it.

* This was reported earlier, with at least one death witnessed by a BBC reporter and reported on the BBC. It is currently being hidden in a bizarre stylistic used by CBS News, which had earlier reported these two deaths openly:

Since 12 Marines were reported killed in Ramadi, and since, as of Tuesday, April 6, only 1 Marine had been reported killed in Fallujah, I think we can safely assume that the reported total KIA for Fallujah is currently 3, with 2 of those occuring April 7.

The two Marines killed today is also confirmed by the "35 since Sunday" number everybody is throwing around:

They keep talking about a bombed mosque, but fail to mention that there were two separate ones. Then when reporting deaths they just add it into previous totals and hope that no one notices.

They have been playing games with the casualty figures in the news reports.

While Rummy was talking on tuesday, CNN had a buyline posted, 1 soldier killed in Fajullah. This is consistent with the business as usual bullet points press conferences in which nothing but spin is produced and casualties are only mentioned in vaguest sanctimonious ways. You know it must be bad when they start counting "enemy" dead.

What about the wounded?
