FBI conducts searches tied to WikiLeaks cyber attacks
Thu Jan 27, 2011 6:04pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The FBI said on Thursday it executed more than 40 search warrants in the United States as part of its investigation into cyber attacks allegedly by a group called "Anonymous" that had backed WikiLeaks.

The cyber attacks, known as 'distributed denial of service,' were targeted against major U.S. companies and organizations and the search warrants coincided with the arrest of five people by British police in connection with the alleged attacks, the FBI said.

U.S. authorities have been looking into cyber-attacks on companies like Amazon and others targeted by hackers backing WikiLeaks after it published classified U.S. communications.

3. It should be clear to everyone now - our government works for big business - not us
it should be the other way around - the government SHOULD protect the people from these massively rich and powerful corporations. but our government has been bought by right wing billionaires and enough democrats have been bought too. at what point to we admit that those in power see us as nothing more than workers and consumers - not humans - not people. and what do we - what can we - do about it?

5. Feds execute search warrants in cyber-attack probe
Source: Washington Times

FBI agents on Thursday executed more than 40 search warrants throughout the United States as part of an ongoing federal investigation into recent coordinated cyber attacks against major companies and organizations.

A group calling itself “Anonymous” has claimed responsibility for the attacks in the U.S. and abroad, saying they conducted them in protest of the companies’ and organizations’ actions. The “Anonymous” group had backed WikiLeaks after it published classified U.S. communications. The FBI said the attacks were facilitated by software tools the group makes available for free download on the Internet. The victims included several major U.S. companies spread across a variety of industries.

According to the FBI, the attacks, known as the “distributed denial of service,” or DDoS, are facilitated by software tools designed to damage a computer network’s ability to function by flooding it with useless commands and information, thereby denying service to legitimate users. The FBI has been investigating cyber attacks on a number of U.S. companies, including Amazon and those targeted by hackers.
