Actually I'm probably just confusing myself with minutia.

3. Uh oh...
Up until now the Japanese had been left alone. Not anymore apparently. I fear that with the inexperience of the Japanese soldiers (some of them didn't even know how to handle their weapons) this could turn into a real tragedy.

8. Weapons? I suspect some may have problems just...
growing the mustache.

<snip>
Japan wants its soldiers assigned to Iraq to blend in with the crowd. The men have been ordered to grow mustaches and the women have been told to wear headscarves. They've also been instructed not to drink alcohol or eat pork.

10. No alcohol or pork?
They must be going nuts. Two things the Japanese love most are drinking alcohol and eating meat. Ouch.

11. Pork is not such an important part of the Japanese diet
They'll be able to manage fine in that department.

On the other hand, it might be hard for these guys to get along without their beer and sake, but they'll grin and bear it.

5. Ya'll are going to get tired of me...
but there has been an update on Raed's blog that pretty much says this was going to happen.

<snip>
The Ukrainian Army withdrew today from Al-Kut city, because of the huge pressure of the street fighting…

I think similar events will happen in Amara soon with the British Army… although the British Army handed over authorities to Iraqis 10 months ago… but still they have some patrols going across the city.

And maybe the uprising people will try to put more pressure on the Italians at Nasryya… but I doubt if they can make the Carabinieri leave the city…

But the thing I expect much is to see more attacks in the extremely-quiet Simawa and Diwanyya… where the Spanish and Japanese soldiers are located.

This new war is not going to stop in days... but the question is when and how...

7. Interesting stuff in there today
An excerpt:

(snip)

The uprising happening in Iraq cannot be stopped easily now, even if AsSadr wanted to stop it.

The Three Smart Political Steps of the Day:

Uno) AsSadr announced that this uprising is the choice of the Iraqi people, he didn’t ask anyone to fight.
I know he is lying, he knows that he is lying…
But that was a smart political thing to do though.
He preferred to leave the opportunity of representing himself as a public leader, but gave more opportunities for other political and religious parties to join the uprising.

Due) AsSadr started a compassion campaign for Falluja people, which had a good response from the majority of Iraqis. This ended the Sunni-Shia tension.

Tre) Launched his first regional affairs message. AsSadr sent an open message to the Kuwaiti people to start putting more pressure on their government, “It is the responsibility of the Kuwaiti people to help us fee our and their country from the big devil”.

(more)

Look at point 3.

9. There is absolutely nothing about this on Japanese TV
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 07:33 PM by Art_from_Ark
I've been flipping through the channels and can't find a single mention of this incident.

On edit: There is a very brief story about this on the Asahi News web page (in Japanese). Apparently, the explosion was outside of the Japanese camp and no problems have been reported inside the camp.
