Kissinger Says Mubarak Exit a `Question of Months,' Urges Muted U.S. Reply
Source: Bloomberg

Henry Kissinger, a former U.S. secretary of state and presidential adviser, said Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is certain to resign within “months at most” as the Arab world’s most populous country braces for “a period of great uncertainty.”

Kissinger said on Bloomberg Television's "In the Loop with Betty Liu" that the U.S. should say little publicly about Egypt during this transition. The U.S. does not want to be perceived as trying to impose a government on the Egyptian people, he said.

“It’s only a question of months at most -- that Mubarak will resign,” Kissinger said. He described the president’s removal as “the first scene of the first act” in Egypt’s political transformation.

“We are going to go through a period of great uncertainty and a lot of maneuvering once the lid is off,” said Kissinger, now chairman of Kissinger Associates Inc.

2. Aside from the fact that Kissinger is
an out-of-touch bloated old fool who was NEVER as wise or wonderful as his reputation would lead one to conclude (as I recall he wiretapped his own employes), if Mubarak stays in power more than a week or two longer and the street demonstrations continue, Egypt will be in literal ruins.

12. Why would anyone listen to that old coot? Particularly as it was his advice that backfired big time
in Iran in 1979. He was one of the voices urging Carter to let the Shah come to the U.S. This was an unnecessary provocation which culminated in the radical students attacking the U.S. embassy and taking hostages.

22. Not what I heard Obama say. Obama says the transition must start now.
He also says that the will of the Egyptian people needs to be followed. That is quite different from Kissinger's talk about Mubarak leaving in a matter of months.

13. His goal is to keep Mubarak for the "transition"
I mean, who better to replace to old regime than the old regime itself?

Unfortunately, Kissinger's pleadings are perfectly consistent with Obama's speech tonight, where he remained thunderously silent on the key demand of the Egyptian people -- that Mubarak leave now. And by "now", the protesters aren't thinking "after the scheduled elections nine months from now."

It's more like, so how does Friday work for you, Mr. Mubarak?

At any rate, I suspect the people will see to their business. Mubarak is a known torturer, jailer and murderer of political opponents. He even does contract "wet work" for the U.S.

This being so, why would people who oppose him want him around for a "transition"? How safe would they be?

23. It's like a "peace process", a way to stall off any peace agreement.
Here we get a "transition" instead of getting Hosni to actually leave power.

26. I think you nailed it.
In crimes that big it takes a long time to wipe away the fingerprints.

I'm thinking of the East German secret police. They burned up their paper shredders and were tearing stuff up by hand when democracy kicked down their doors and came marching in.

Cheney with the shredder truck parked at his gate. I never saw a shredder mounted on a truck before for anything besides cutting down trees.

25. Go Away!
He's 86 years old and left office in 1977.
Why can't some people just retire gracefully?

Surely the people of Cambodia, East Timor and Chile are eagerly awaiting his pronouncements on "democracy".
