Man accused of forgery in Pa. congressional race

A suburban Philadelphia man was charged Wednesday with falsifying nominating petition signatures to help a Republican candidate who eventually won a U.S. House seat.

The attorney general's office charged Paul V. Summers, 59, of Drexel Hill, with seven misdemeanor counts of forgery and seven misdemeanor counts of false signatures and statements in nominating petitions circulated before last spring's primary.

Authorities said the alleged crimes came to light when the candidate, Rep. Patrick Meehan, alerted them to possible discrepancies in his election paperwork.

The attorney general's office said 39 people on seven nominating petitions told investigators they did not sign the petitions and gave no one permission to sign on their behalf. In some cases, the supposed signatory was incapacitated, had died or did not live at the listed address.
