Protesters flood Tahrir Square, for 'Day of Departure' against a president who has said he is ready to go but not yet.
Last Modified: Feb 04 2011 10:07 GMT

Chants urging President Hosni Mubarak to leave are reverberating across Cairo's Tahrir Square, Egypt's protest epicentre, where tens of thousands have gathered for what they said was the "Day of Departure".

As the country entered its eleventh day of unrest, mass demonstrations commenced after Friday prayers.

Thousands gathered in the city of Alexandria, holding up placards and chanting "He must go!" an Al Jazeera correspondent there reported. Three thousand people also joined demonstrations in the Mohandeseen district of Giza.

"The feel here is that today is the final day for Mubarak, it's time for him to go," Gigi Ibrahim, a political activist told Al Jazeera from Tahrir Square.

"This whole process has been about who is more determined and who is not willing to give up. And everyday get more and more determined," Ibrahim said.

1. I left work early and from what I'm seeing, people are policing themselves
and there is no violence now. Mubarak will be leaving today. I'm sure of it.

I am so sorry for all the people who have died and been hurt. Your sacrifices are not moot. I think you are really going to win this Revolution.

I hope your predictions are correct.

The awesome thing is they are proving that they are the good guys. When they are left alone they are peaceful. However, if they were able to march down to the presidential palace I'm not so sure how peaceful they'd be. I reckon it could lead to a Chauhcesku "moment", actually.

7. Yes, this is really the only way they were going to win
As long as they maintain this, when I awaken, this world and their little piece of it will have changed, tectonically. I didn't sleep a bit today and I don't think I can stay up to see the moment. But I go to bed confident that that this really is The Day of Departure.

2. Reporter on the ground is saying that the pro-democracy guys are strictly securing the square
themselves. Making sure that no-one comes in with any weapons. Estimated crowd size is a million, at the moment, and growing.

8. Imam gives Friday prayer in Tahrir Square, tells protesters to maintain resolve
The imam who led Friday's prayer in Tahrir Square called on protesters, who continued to gather for the eleventh day, to maintain their resolve until they win, and achieve their goal of ousting President Hosni Mubarak.

The imam, whose name is unknown, described the movement as a "white revolution," saying it is an Egyptian movement that includes both Muslim and Christians.

The revolution does not have a religious goal, said the imam, who added that Egyptians of all backgrounds are joining in. "They want us to be a humiliated people, an quiescent people, and an oppressed people...But no, and 1,000 no's," he said.

"Egypt taught the world dignity and democracy," the preacher added, calling for freedom, democracy, regime change, the release of detainees, and the abolition of the emergency law.

11. Guardian article & Vid: 'Day of departure' protests: hundreds of thousands return to Cairo's streets
Tahrir Square packed for renewed protests calling for Mubarak to leave office immediately as army keeps rival factions apart

Mustafa Khalili in Cairo and Mark Tran
guardian.co.uk, Friday February 4 2011 12.51 GMT

Hundreds of thousands of anti-government protesters have again packed Cairo's central square, waving Egyptian flags, singing the national anthem and calling on President Hosni Mubarak to go.

Billed as a "day of depature" rally, a reference to demands that Mubarak leave today, the gathering at Tahrir Square was the biggest since Tuesday, when at least a quarter of million people turned out.

A cleric at prayers in the square said: "We want the head of the regime removed," and praised the "revolution of the young". Chants of "Leave! Leave! Leave!" and "Today is the last day" swelled from the throng. One banner read "Game over" in English.

The protesters passed through military checkpoints apparently designed to keep away pro-Mubarak demonstrators, whose presence triggered violent clashes for two days. The defence minister, Hussein Tantawi, and senior army officials visited the square before Friday prayers and soldiers were checking IDs and performing body searches, a sign that Egypt's most powerful institution was sanctioning the demonstration.

Human chains of protesters performed secondary searches inside the square.

15. As reported elsewhere 40% of the Egyptian population lives on less than $2.00 per day. How low will
we have to go before we're in the streets? Will it be $20.00, $10.00 or $2.00 like Egypt?
