Report: Keith Olbermann to join Current TV
Source: USAToday.com

By Trey Barrineau, USA TODAY

Former MSNBC television personality Keith Olbermann, who departed the cable news network in January, is expected to announce on Tuesday that he's joining the public affairs channel Current TV, The New York Times reports.

Because Olbermann's exit from MSNBC includes a clause that prohibits him from joining another TV outlet for an undetermined amount of time, it's not clear when he'd be starting at Current TV. But it appears that the move has been in the works for some time. According to the Times, the Internet domain name TheOlbermannShow.com was registered two days before his on-air announcement that he was leaving MSNBC.

Olbermann's arrival could boost Current TV's profile. The cable channel, which counts former vice president Al Gore among its founders, is currently only available in about 60 million homes.

95. Thanks for the link, Yvonne.
Keith Olbermann announced on Tuesday that he will host a one-hour, nightly primetime show on Current TV starting in late spring. He will also become the "chief news officer" for Current.

In a conference call with reporters, Olbermann said that "nothing is more vital to a free America than a free media, "and nothing is more vital to my concept of a free media than news that is produced independently of corporate interference." He called Current "the model truth seeking entity" in television, and said that his new show was "the most exciting event in my career."

He said the show "will be for all intents and purposes an improved and we hope amplified and stronger version of the show that I just did at my previous network." He said the name and time of the show have not been figured out yet.

Al Gore, the chairman of Current TV, also spoke on the conference call. He said he was "extremely honored and delighted" that Olbermann was coming to Current. He said Olbermann was a "great fit with Current in every way."

This is good.

why would you need to watch it live anyways? Current TV isn't a 24-hour news channel a la CNN/MSNBC/FNC. Current TV also has a YouTube channel.

We depend upon cable a lot for weather reports.
I just don't see how this is a good deal for KO. I mean... less people will hear what he has to say. Like us. Sure he can be freer and all but I don't get it.

And if they are smart, they would make a deal with Al Jazeera English to provide viewers with some of their reports. And also follow Wikileaks. Then we might have an actual news channel.

24. Comcast owns a 10 percent stake in Current TV.
Edited on Mon Feb-07-11 11:14 PM by Tx4obama
And at http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/07/olbermann-said-to-be-going-to-current-tv/
it says that:
"One of the people with knowledge of the plans said Mr. Olbermann would have an equity stake in Current TV."

So, wouldn't it be hilarious if Keith ends up with more equity in Current TV than Comcast does??? !!! :)

Edited to add: If Current TV ends up with Keith, Cenk, Rachel, and a few more good ones - then it would ROCK!

38. Yay! Current is a great channel - Channel 189 on U-verse
189 just went to the top of my favorite channel list!

it is a great channel for what it is. Comes as a regular channel on AT&T U-verse - no extra fees to get it. Their Vanguard series is pretty cool and they are very liberal.

This is GREAT news IMO! They also have limited commercials. Keith should have much more freedom there. This is awesome if true!

53. Not good news for me. Cox doesn't provide it & Current-tv online isn't
easy to watch.

I'm sending a letter to Cox asking them to include Current in their "essential tv" package, which includes Fixed News. If Cox can provide a "news" channel that strictly panders to the GOP, then they would have to give me a good reason why it wouldn't add Current to their programming.

I don't think this is such good news. We do get Current on Comcast Digital channel 107, but who the heck ever heard of it and what is their viewership? About 10 people? I was hoping Keith would be picked up by CNN, CNN Headline, or at least a network that people watch where he would be seen and heard.

99. Which makes it Keith's baby to mold in whatever image he wants.
This is going to become our channel with real news and doc. He is not just going to have a one hour program - he is going to have charge of all news programs. I am willing to bet there is a line-up of liberal media people waiting for the chance to get heard. As to the rating now - they do not matter - they will bump as soon as he is on and then it is up to him to add news that people want to watch.

62. Stream Current TV on Hulu
They have full episodes of Current TV shows here:

http://www.hulu.com/network/current-tv?sort=name

So hopefully, in my case, I might get to see more of KO now since I dropped cable. :-)

64. While his agreement with MSNBC won't allow him to have a show on cable
for a while, it most likely doesn't preclude him from having an internet show.

77. USA Today is such a rag
"TV personality"...but I bet he calls beck, et al "journalists".

Clue here Barrineau...if you have relegated Olbermann to a mere "tv personality"...then by definition you should be writing gossip for my High School paper.

Jerk.

79. Hopefully the show will be carried live. Otherwise I think this is a huge downgrade.
CurrentTV is available to a very limited amount of viewers. But if this was also online it might actually work.

80. Current TV, bah humbug!
It was created when Al Gore bought Newsworld International and turned it into the cable equivalent of YouTube.

A station that carried mostly Canadian and other international news broadcasts and features and was the only news source I trusted during the invasion of Iraq (because Canada did not participate) went off the air. The excuse was that it had very few viewers. Well, duh! It was never advertised ANYWHERE. I found it only by accident.

Al Gore would have done a much greater public service if he had kept Newsworld International and ADVERTISED IT heavily.

Current TV: Remembering the Failed IPO

By Shira Ovide

Current TV, the public-affairs cable channel, is also the new home for deposed MSNBC host Keith Olbermann.

Current announced that Olbermann will host a nightly news and commentary show on Current TV, and will serve as the company’s “chief news officer.” Olbermann also is slated to own an equity investment in Current Media, the cable channel’s parent company....

In its IPO filings, Current Media described its goals this way:

We believe there is a significant gap between what is being delivered by traditional sources of TV and what is demanded by young adults. Young adults need and want news and information about what is going on in their world; however, they have not had a news and information source on TV that speaks to them. Young adults increasingly are turning to other platforms, especially the Internet, for news and information.

As a result, there is a large market opportunity to develop an integrated media platform capable of cost-effectively engaging young adults around news, information and lifestyle entertainment, and to build a brand premised on communicating what is going on in the lives of this young-adult generation. There is demand from both young adults and the advertisers who target them for a media platform that engages 18-34 year-olds in their own voices and from their own perspectives, and whose content is defined by what is most important in their lives: from pop culture to politics, careers to relationships.

If Current and Olbermann are interested in taking another run at the public markets, Current Media’s proposed stock symbol – CRTM – is still unused in the U.S.

87. Optimum TV sucks more and more every day.
No Current
No HDnet

Whenever one of my favorites irritates TPTB, they go to a more fact based place... and I lose them.

I said day one that he needed to go to current TV. I now declare myself psychic and demand that you all worship me as a god.

Alright, that was a joke, but seriously this is great news, He can be as loud and liberal as he wants, and I get more programming for one of my favorite channels. Awesome.

My cable company (Insight) doesn't carry it and doubt they'll pick it up. In the meantime OL is better than nothing.

Keith without right wing overlords, it should be awesome.

109. Phew! I had appointments scheduled to switch from DISH-TV to Charter cable.
Was doing it for a variety of reasons (including cutting costs). Just called and canceled the cable install & told Dish I'm sticking with them. And made it very clear to both companies why I was doing it. Told Charter that I might again consider switching if it made economic sense and, moreover, only if they started carrying both FSTV & Current. So now I can watch Thom, Democracy Now and Keith!!
