Greek oil supertanker Irene hijacked off Oman

An supertanker carrying about $200m (£125m; 146m euros) worth of crude oil has been hijacked off the coast of Oman, the vessel's Greek operator says.

Athens-based shipping company Enesel said they had lost communication with the Irene SL.

The vessel was on its way from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Mexico when it was attacked.

Although the incident happened hundreds of miles from Somalia, pirate gangs are known to operate there.

should have everyone on high alert for the coming spike in oil prices! This story would not be so bad but add in the turmoil in Egypt & potentialy the entire middle east & the fact the Saudis have been lying about how much oil reserves they have & you can be sure oil traders are going to run oil prices up to 2008 levels & higher really soon!

I know, this is nothing to JOKE about.

"This morning the vessel was attacked by armed men," the Irene SL's Greece-based manager Enesel said. "For the moment there is no communication with the vessel."

Cmdr. Susie Thomson, spokeswoman for the multinational Combined Maritime Forces fighting piracy in the area, said the 1,000-foot-long tanker was hijacked 220 miles off Oman and was likely to have been attacked by Somali pirates. "We can only speculate as to where the ship is being taken."

Angelo said the Irene SL's cargo of Kuwaiti crude oil represented nearly 20 percent of total U.S. daily crude oil imports and urged governments to step up anti-piracy efforts.
