Rep. Justin Amash joins Dennis Kucinich and Democrats in opposition to Patriot Act extensions

Grand Rapids-area Congressman Justin Amash was among a handful of freshmen joining Democrats Tuesday in thwarting an expedited approval of key elements in the post-Sept. 11 anti-terror Patriot Act.
Because House leaders failed to get the two-thirds majority to renew the provisions in �suspension,� a mechanism used to speed up votes on issues considered non-controversial.

The House voted 277-148 to renew the provisions, meaning they will surely be approved in regular order. But in joining liberals like Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, in voting no, some Tea Party-backed Republicans stuck to their guns in opposing what they see as big government.
