Islamabad, Heavy fighting has erupted between forces loyal to Uzbek warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum and those of government appointed military commander, Gen. Hashim Habibi, in Faryab province of Afghanistan, Pakistani newspaper Daily Times reported Thursday.

"Dostum's forces have captured Shirin Tagab, Jama Bazaar and Bilchiragh districts and heavy fighting is still going on in the outskirts of all these districts," the paper said quoting Habibi said.

The Pakistan based Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) quoted the governor of Faryab province, Anayatullah Anayat, as saying that Dostum's fighters were advancing on the provincial capital Maimana being only 25 km away and having seized several districts.

"The situation is very bad," he said.

KABUL (Reuters) - Forces of a renegade adviser to the Afghan president have overrun the capital of a northern province, a defense ministry official said on Thursday.
"Both the governor and the commander have fled. Dostum's forces have overrun Maimana," said the ministry official, who did not want to be identified.

The ministry earlier began flying the first of several hundred troops to restore order in the remote northern province of Faryab after forces of ethnic Uzbek strongman General Abdul Rashid Dostum occupied several districts on Wednesday and surrounded the capital Maimana.

Afghan City Falls to Strongman as Troops Fly In
36 minutes ago

By Sayed Salahuddin

KABUL (Reuters) - Forces of a renegade adviser to Afghan President Hamid Karzai have overrun the capital of a northern province, a defense ministry official said on Thursday.

Forces of ethnic Uzbek strongman General Abdul Rashid Dostum invaded Faryab province on Wednesday, prompting the central government to dispatch national army troops there on Thursday in an attempt to restore order.

"Both the governor and the commander have fled. Dostum's forces have overrun Maimana," said a defense ministry official, who did not want to be identified.

Presidential spokesman Jawed Ludin said an emergency National Security Council meeting chaired by Karzai had heard the city fell "to irresponsible armed individuals from neighboring provinces and areas around Maimana."

...

Fresh factional fighting is bad news for Karzai, who needs to ensure security for elections in September with the help of NATO (news - web sites)-led peacekeepers and the U.S.-led force whose main task is pursuing Taliban and al Qaeda militants.

8. How do you tell a "Warlord" from a "Strongman" or "Leader"?
How do you tell when people have been kidnapped rather than
"detained" or "taken into custody"? It's a very confusing day.

I suppose Dostum decided that it was a good time to end the
charade.

9. Thanks to the US he has gotten back to his roots: opium
This guy rapes, pillages, murders for money, runs a very profitable prison, scams tons of US taxpayer dollars and makes a killing in the opium trade.
He's Bush's kinda man.

13. I have no doubt that the new sources of finance
recently opened up by the US intervention have played
a large part in his renewing his enterpreneurial spirit.

I wonder what his relationship is with our buddy in Uzbekistan?

16. Dostum is the worst of the lot
Maybe Hickmetyr is almost as bad.

Problem was that once we drove the Taliban out, we did NOTHING to clean up these warlords.......in fact, we ENABLED them.
