U.S. homeland security budget gets small budget boost

Feb 14 (Reuters) - The Obama administration on Monday proposed a nearly 2 percent increase in spending on U.S. homeland security for 2012, one the few areas of the budget that will likely see a boost as the White House battles a ballooning deficit.

Its 2012 budget proposal requests $43.8 billion for homeland security across the entire federal government, excluding the Defense Department, up $800 million from 2011.

The request for the increase comes as militant groups like the al Qaeda wing based in Yemen have increased their efforts to strike the United States, including plots to blow up bombs on airplanes or in major city centers.

The Department of Homeland Security alone would see its budget grow to more than $37 billion, up almost 3 percent over the 2011 budget level, and includes additional funds for ramping up transportation and border security.

2. Oh please no,.....
that is the biggest boondoggle going.
Our border agents caught the fellow who was going to blow up the Space Needle and something in LA years ago - before the HS budget went wild.
There are now about 20something employees. They want a new office space so they are buying a building - but the regs say they must have at least 50 employees to do that. Guess who is getting more employees. On top of that the building needs to be remodeled.

As it is - they don't have much to do so they sit above farm fields and watch the workers with binoculars.

This is just another gift to corporate America.

3. More Homeland Security means less freedom
The "no-fly" list wnet form a few dozen to tens of thousands. I have to believe that tens of thousands of people did not suddenly become potential terrorists.

4. Soon only the rich and terrorist will be able to afford to fly anyway
So those probes at the airport will be insignificant for the masses.
